Vancouver Layover Guide

Heads-up: a few booking links below are affiliate links. Booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you.

Vancouver is mountains, ocean, and rainforest wrapped around a walkable downtown, with a train straight from the airport. Few layover cities pack this much nature into a day off. Here is how to do it like a local.

Getting in from YVR

  • Canada Line SkyTrain: from the airport to Waterfront downtown in about 26 minutes, trains every few minutes. Note the airport add-fare (around 6.50 dollars) applies leaving the airport only.
  • Pay contactless: tap a card or phone, or use a Compass card.

The must-sees (book ahead)

  • Stanley Park and the Seawall: a 400-hectare forest park ringed by a 22 km waterfront path, free, and the best thing in the city.
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge: a swaying bridge high over a rainforest canyon. Book entry.
  • Grouse Mountain: a Skyride up to the peak for the whole-city view. Book the Skyride.
  • Granville Island: a public market and artisan district under the bridge, free to browse.

Hidden gems for your day off

  • Lynn Canyon: a free suspension bridge in the same rainforest, the smart alternative to Capilano.
  • Gastown and the Steam Clock: the cobbled old quarter (the clock is worth a photo, though it has been showing the wrong time lately).
  • Museum of Anthropology at UBC: stunning Northwest Coast First Nations art, reopened in 2024 after a rebuild.
  • Queen Elizabeth Park: the free high point of the city, with gardens and a skyline view.
  • Kitsilano Beach: the classic free city beach, mountains across the water.
  • Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden: a serene Ming-style garden in Chinatown.
  • Science World: the geodesic dome on False Creek, a landmark in its own right.

Captain AL’s tip: the Stanley Park seawall is the best free thing in Vancouver, so rent a bike and ride the whole 22 km loop. And if you would rather not pay for Capilano, Lynn Canyon has its own free suspension bridge in the same rainforest. Day to spare? A Sea to Sky and Whistler day trip is spectacular.

Eat like a local

  • Fresh wild salmon.
  • Some of the best sushi outside Japan.
  • A Japadog from a street cart.
  • A Nanaimo bar with your coffee.

Best time to go

  • Summer: glorious, dry, and long days, the peak.
  • Fall: crisp and colourful.
  • October to March: mild but properly wet, so pack a rain shell.

Stay sharp

  • Vancouver is very safe, but avoid the Downtown Eastside around Main and Hastings, especially after dark.
  • Tap contactless or a Compass card on the SkyTrain, SeaBus, and buses.
