Bangkok Airline Crew Layover Guide
Bangkok is one of the most popular crew layover cities in the world — and for good reason. Great food, excellent massages, world-class shopping, and a nightlife scene that runs around the clock. Whether you have 12 hours or 48, Bangkok delivers. This guide covers everything crew need to know: getting into the city fast, where to stay, what to do by layover length, and how to stay safe.
Emergency Numbers — Bangkok / Thailand
Save these before you leave the aircraft. Do not rely on roaming or Wi-Fi being available in an emergency.

Critical note for crew: Thailand does not have a single all-purpose emergency number like 112 or 911. 1155 (Tourist Police) is your most reliable first call — they speak English, are available 24/7, and handle everything from theft to medical referrals. For medical emergencies, 1669 connects to the national ambulance service, but Bangkok traffic is severe — if you have travel insurance, private ambulance numbers 1724 or 1719 will often reach you faster and take you directly to a private hospital with English-speaking staff.
Recommended private hospitals in Bangkok with 24/7 English-speaking emergency departments:
- Bumrungrad International Hospital (Ambulance): +66 2011 5222
- Samitivej Hospital (Sukhumvit): +66 2 022 2222
- BNH Hospital: +66 2 022 0700
Getting from Suvarnabhumi to the City
Suvarnabhumi (pronounced roughly “Su-wan-na-poom”) is located about 30 km east of central Bangkok. Traffic on the expressways can be brutal — especially during rush hours (07:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00). Always factor this in.
Airport Rail Link (ARL) — recommended for crew The fastest and most reliable option regardless of time of day. The ARL station is on Basement Level (B) of the terminal — follow signs from arrivals. Trains run from 05:30 to midnight, every 10–15 minutes.
- To Phaya Thai Station (BTS Skytrain interchange): 30 minutes, 45 Baht
- To Makkasan Station (MRT subway interchange): 25 minutes, 35 Baht
From Phaya Thai, the BTS Skytrain puts you within walking distance of Sukhumvit hotels, Siam Square malls, Silom, and Sathorn in minutes. As of December 2025, you can tap in and out using a contactless credit or debit card — no token needed.
Taxi Available 24/7 at Level 1, Gates 4–7. Use the official queue machine — it prints a ticket with your bay number. Never accept approaches from touts inside the terminal. Metered fare plus THB 50 airport surcharge plus expressway tolls (THB 25–75). Total to Sukhumvit: typically THB 350–500 (€9–13). Journey time: 30–60 minutes depending on traffic.
Grab / Bolt Cheaper than taxis in most cases. Pick up from the designated ride-hailing zone — follow signs. Pre-book via app before you clear customs.
Pro tip for crew: If your hotel is on or near a BTS or MRT station, the ARL is always the right call. If you’re traveling with a crew bag and rollaboard late at night, a taxi is worth the extra cost.
Best Areas for Crew Stays in Bangkok
Sukhumvit (Asok / Nana / Phrom Phong) The default crew area. Direct BTS access, hundreds of restaurants, convenience stores on every corner, and 24-hour massage shops. Most international airlines hotel their crew here. Safe, well-lit, and easy to navigate.
Silom / Sathorn More business-district feel, slightly quieter than Sukhumvit. Excellent Thai food options, the Lumpini Park running route nearby, and the famous Patpong Night Market. Well served by both BTS and MRT.
Siam Square / Ratchathewi Central, close to the big malls (Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, MBK). Good for crew who want to shop or eat without taking extra transport. Direct BTS connection to Phaya Thai for the airport.
Near the Airport (Lat Krabang / Bang Na) If you need maximum rest with a very early departure or short overnight, several good hotels sit 10–15 minutes from Suvarnabhumi. Far from city attractions but unbeatable for minimising transit time.
What to Do on a Layover in Bangkok
Under 8 hours — stay close to the hotel Bangkok traffic makes quick city trips risky on short layovers. Use the time well: Thai massage (budget THB 250–400/hour in reputable shophouse spas), street food on Sukhumvit Soi 38 or at a nearby night market, or simply recover with a hotel pool and good food. Don’t fight the city on a short turn.
8–16 hours — explore one area properly Take the BTS to Siam Square for world-class mall food courts (MBK, Siam Paragon food hall) and shopping. Or head to Chatuchak Weekend Market (open Saturday and Sunday, JJ Market — the largest market in Asia) via BTS Mo Chit. Alternatively, the riverside: take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and catch the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Wat Pho (temple of the reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun. Allow 45 minutes each way minimum.
16–48 hours — the full Bangkok experience Add the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha (allow 2–3 hours, dress code enforced — no shorts or sleeveless). Dine on a sunset river cruise. Explore Chinatown (Yaowarat) for the best street food in the city — go after 18:00 when it comes alive. Visit the rooftop bars on Silom (Vertigo at Banyan Tree, Octave on Sukhumvit) for a Bangkok sunset. Day trip option: Ayutthaya by train (90 minutes each way) for UNESCO-listed ancient temples.
Crew Tips for Bangkok
Money: ATMs are everywhere in Sukhumvit and at the airport. Most charge a foreign transaction fee of THB 220 per withdrawal — withdraw larger amounts to minimise fees. Card payments are accepted at malls and hotels but many street vendors, tuk-tuks, and local restaurants are cash only. Revolut and Wise cards significantly reduce ATM fees.
Transport in the city: The BTS Skytrain and MRT are air-conditioned, fast, and crew-friendly. Download the Grab app before you land — it works like Uber, prices are fixed upfront, and drivers track to your location. Avoid tuk-tuks for longer journeys — they are for fun, not efficiency, and prices are negotiable.
Scams: Bangkok has well-documented tourist scams. The most common: a friendly local tells you a temple or attraction is “closed today” and offers to take you somewhere else (usually a gem shop or tailor). It is never closed. Ignore and walk on. Always use metered taxis or Grab — never agree a fixed price with a street taxi.
Dress code: Temples require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf in your day bag. Most tourist areas sell cheap cover-ups at the entrance if needed.
Safety: Sukhumvit and Silom are safe for crew at all times. Use standard city awareness — keep bags in front, avoid displaying expensive items in crowded markets. The Tourist Police (1155) are genuinely helpful and English-speaking.
Visa: Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa exemption on arrival in Thailand. Check your passport nationality — rules change. As of 2025, many Western passport holders receive 60 days. Your airline crew ID does not replace passport immigration requirements.
Drinking Water
Do not drink tap water in Bangkok. This is non-negotiable. Tap water is not safe to drink directly anywhere in Thailand, including hotels. Always use bottled water or the filtered water dispensers found in most crew hotels. Most hotels provide complimentary bottled water — always check. Carry a bottle with you at all times, especially in the heat. Dehydration is a real risk for crew arriving after long sectors, particularly in Bangkok’s humidity.
