Orlando Airline Crew Layover Guide
Orlando is unique among crew layover destinations — it is almost entirely built around leisure and entertainment, and proudly so. Theme parks, warm weather, golf, spa resorts, and outlet shopping. There is no great historic city to explore on foot, but for crew who want to switch off completely, spend time with family, or simply enjoy world-class resort facilities, Orlando delivers unlike anywhere else. It also serves as the gateway to some of Florida’s best beaches, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys.

Getting from MCO to the Attractions / Hotels
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is located approximately 20 km (13 miles) southeast of the Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort area, and about 16 km (10 miles) from downtown Orlando.
Uber / Lyft — most practical for most crew The standard option for most crew hotels near the theme parks. Pickup from designated rideshare zones at the terminal.
- To Walt Disney World area (Lake Buena Vista): approximately $25–40, 25–35 minutes
- To Universal Orlando / International Drive area: approximately $20–35, 20–30 minutes
- To Downtown Orlando: approximately $20–30, 20 minutes
Taxi Available at designated taxi zones. Metered fares — slightly higher than Uber/Lyft. Same journey times as above.
Brightline Train Brightline high-speed rail connects the MCO station (located directly in Terminal C) to South Florida, including West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and downtown Miami. Trains run multiple times daily. For crew doing a multi-city Florida layover, this is a game-changer.
- MCO to West Palm Beach: approximately 2 hours, from $49
- MCO to Miami: approximately 3 hours, from $79
(Note: Brightline does not go to Downtown Orlando or the theme parks; it travels south from the airport.)
Rental Car — strongly recommended for most Orlando layovers Orlando is a car city. Without a rental car, you are dependent on Uber/Lyft for every movement — which adds up quickly. The MCO Rental Car Center is connected to the airport via the AirTrain. All major rental companies operate here. For crew with theme park plans or beach day trips, a rental car is almost essential.
Hotel Shuttle Buses Most theme park resort hotels operate free shuttle buses from MCO. Check with your crew hotel — this can be the most convenient option if your accommodation is near the parks.
Best Areas for Crew Stays in Orlando
International Drive (I-Drive) The main crew hotel corridor — dozens of hotels at all price points, close to Universal Orlando, Sea World, and the convention centre. Walkable along I-Drive itself with restaurants, entertainment, and shopping.
Lake Buena Vista / Disney Springs area Closer to Walt Disney World. Good restaurant selection at Disney Springs (no park ticket required). Several good crew-rate hotels in this area.
Downtown Orlando The actual city — lakes, parks, a genuine urban core with good restaurants and bars. Lake Eola Park is beautiful. Quieter and more local than the tourist corridor. 20 minutes from MCO.
Kissimmee South of the airport, closest area to Walt Disney World. More budget-friendly accommodation options. Less polished but practical for short layovers focused on the parks.
What to Do on a Layover in Orlando
The Theme Parks — the obvious choice Orlando has the world’s highest concentration of theme parks within a small area:
- Walt Disney World — Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom. Buy tickets online in advance — always cheaper than at the gate. EPCOT’s World Showcase is excellent for crew (food and drink from 11 countries, open until 21:00 or later). Book park reservations online in advance for Disney parks.
- Universal Orlando — Islands of Adventure (Harry Potter Wizarding World is exceptional), Universal Studios, Epic Universe. Multi-park passes offer the best value.
- SeaWorld Orlando — smaller, less crowded, excellent for a half-day. Combine with Aquatica water park next door.
- Kennedy Space Center — 50 minutes east of Orlando. One of the genuinely great experiences in the USA for aviation and space enthusiasts. The shuttle exhibit, rocket launch viewing, and astronaut encounters are outstanding. Book tickets online.
Beaches — underused by crew Orlando is 70 km (45 minutes) from both the Atlantic coast (Cocoa Beach, New Smyrna Beach) and the Gulf coast (Clearwater, St Pete Beach — 90 minutes west). Cocoa Beach is the closest — Space Coast surf culture, reasonable beach, and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop. Clearwater Beach consistently ranks among the best beaches in the USA — white sand, warm Gulf water, stunning sunsets.
Natural Florida Blue Spring State Park (90 minutes north) — manatee sighting from November to March, crystal clear spring swimming in summer. Wekiwa Springs State Park (30 minutes north) — canoeing and kayaking through pristine Florida springs. These are genuinely spectacular and completely different from the theme park experience.
Short layover — International Drive Walk I-Drive, visit ICON Park (observation wheel with views over Orlando), browse the outlet malls, or have a genuinely good meal at one of the chef-driven restaurants that have opened in the area in recent years.
Crew Tips for Orlando
Car is non-negotiable for most layover activities in Orlando beyond walking I-Drive. Theme parks, beaches, and natural Florida all require wheels. Rent from MCO — book in advance with AirlineCrewDiscount.net below. Alamo has the best deals for airline staff.
Park tickets: Never buy Disney or Universal tickets at the gate. Always buy online in advance — significant savings available. Multi-day tickets offer dramatically better per-day value than single-day tickets.
Weather: Orlando is warm year-round. June–September is rainy season — afternoon thunderstorms are almost daily but pass quickly. Theme parks stay open through rain. Bring a light poncho. Peak crowd season: summer (June–August) and Christmas/New Year. Quietest periods: September–early November, January–February (excluding MLK and President’s Day weekends).
Money: Card accepted everywhere. Tipping: 18–20% at restaurants, standard USA practice throughout. Theme park food is expensive — $20+ for a basic meal inside the parks is normal.
Drinking Water
Orlando tap water is safe to drink and meets all US federal standards. Florida water comes from the Floridan Aquifer and has a slight mineral taste that some visitors notice. Crew hotels typically have filtered water pitchers or dispensers. Bottled water is not necessary but is widely available and inexpensive. Stay very well hydrated in Orlando’s heat and humidity — dehydration is a real risk for crew arriving from long-haul sectors and immediately heading into theme parks.
