How Much Sleep Do Airline Crew Need? The 8-Hour Rule Falls
The eight-hour rule just lost its evidence, and that is not the good news it sounds like
Two studies this year took the number apart. What they actually found was not that you need less sleep. It was that when you sleep, and how predictably, matters more than the total.

The eight hours you were raised on is not a research finding. Nobody measured it, agreed on it, and wrote it down. It hardened into a rule somewhere between the factory whistle and the bedside clock, and on 25 August 2026 a review in Brain Medicine went looking for its evidence and did not find any.
That headline has been travelling fast, and in a crew room it lands wrong. Read quickly, it says you need less sleep than you thought. Read properly, it says something far more uncomfortable for anyone who works to a roster.

What the review actually looked at
The paper is a narrative review titled The new science of sleep: Insights from pre-industrial societies and phylogenomics, published in Brain Medicine on 25 August 2026 by Seithikurippu R. Pandi-Perumal and colleagues, working across institutions in India, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United States. It pulls together anthropological fieldwork, archival history and comparative genomics rather than running a new experiment.
The centrepiece is three societies that live without electric light: the Hadza in Tanzania, the San in Namibia, and the Tsimane in Bolivia. If eight hours were the human baseline, these are the people who would show it.
They do not. Sleep in all three tops out in the low sevens. Two ranges are circulating and both are real: the journal’s own announcement gives 6.4 to 7.1 hours, while the Surrey sleep researchers summarising the same field literature give 5.7 to 7.1. Both describe the same three societies. Whether they rest on identical underlying field data is something we could not confirm, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What is not in doubt is the direction: every published version of the number sits below eight.
What is sleep regularity?
Sleep regularity is how closely your sleep and wake times repeat from one day to the next, independent of how many hours you get. Two people can both average seven hours and have completely different regularity: one goes down at 23:00 every night, the other lands somewhere between 21:00 and 04:00 depending on the pairing. The Brain Medicine review puts regularity, timing and light exposure among the things industrialisation genuinely changed, while total hours barely moved.
The four things that changed, and why crew should read them twice
The review is specific about what industrialisation did to sleep. Four things moved:
- Sleep moved later. Bedtimes drifted away from dusk.
- Day-to-day regularity fell away. The same clock time stopped meaning the same thing.
- The link to natural light weakened. Artificial light decoupled the body clock from the sun.
- Diagnosable sleep disorders became more common.
Now read that list as a job description. Late sign-ons and pre-dawn call times move sleep later and earlier in the same week. Regularity is not merely reduced, it is actively randomised by the bid period. The light cue is whatever the hotel blackout curtain lets through at the wrong hour in the wrong time zone. Crew are not a mild case of the modern sleep problem. Crew are the extreme end of it, and the total-hours number that dominates every headline is the one variable the research says moved least.
The other study, and the number everyone quoted
The second paper is the one that produced the tidy figure. Published in Nature on 13 May 2026 under the title Sleep chart of biological ageing clocks in middle and late life, it used UK Biobank data from more than 500,000 adults aged 37 to 84 and compared self-reported sleep against 23 biological ageing measures built from imaging, plasma proteomics and metabolomics.
The result was a U-shape. The smallest gap between biological and calendar age sat between 6.4 and 7.8 hours, varying by organ and by sex. Both ends were worse: short sleepers and long sleepers alike showed faster biological ageing.
Here is the part that did not travel with the headline. That precision is borrowed. The neurologist Jose-Alberto Palma has argued that reporting an optimum to the nearest fraction of an hour, from data where participants gave one subjective figure to the nearest whole hour, is measuring with a yardstick and answering in millimetres. He also points out that people over-report their sleep by roughly half an hour to an hour, and that the least accurate reporters are the good sleepers, which bends the curve in exactly the direction the study found.
His other two objections matter more for a crew reader than the arithmetic. Undiagnosed sleep apnoea would produce the same U-shape without long sleep causing anything, and some conditions cause long sleep rather than resulting from it. None of that makes the study wrong. It makes 6.4 to 7.8 a broad signal rather than a target to hit, and anyone selling you a decimal place is overselling.
Nobody has measured people who sleep like us
Every number above comes from people who sleep at night. The three pre-industrial societies track the local light and dark cycle almost perfectly, which is the whole reason they are interesting. The UK Biobank cohort is the general population of a country where most people work days.
Not one of those figures was measured on somebody going to bed at 11:00 in a blacked-out hotel room after a night crossing. UK Biobank’s sleep question has historically asked people to include naps in their total, and we could not confirm from the paper itself whether this analysis pulled naps back out. Read 6.4 to 7.8 as a figure for a whole day rather than for a night, because the metabolic effect of a nap and a night are not the same thing.
The reviewers behind the Brain Medicine paper say the quiet part out loud, and it is the single most relevant sentence in either study for this audience: as far as their synthesis can determine, nobody has tested whether split sleep with reliable timing performs as well as consolidated sleep. That is the crew question. Four hours in the bunk plus three at the hotel, week in and week out, on a schedule your body could at least learn. It is how a large part of this profession lives, and it is unmeasured.
The misreading that could actually hurt you
There is a version of this news that ends with a pilot deciding six hours is scientifically fine and bidding accordingly. That conclusion does not follow, for a reason worth being precise about.
These studies measure long-run health markers: biological ageing, metabolic risk, disease over decades. Not one of them measures whether you will catch the error at the end of a duty period. Alertness on the flight deck runs on hours awake and where you sit in your circadian low, and that is a separate body of evidence with its own regulatory architecture built on top of it. Seven hours might be a perfectly good number for your arteries and still leave you impaired at 04:00 after a long duty. The two questions are not in conflict. They are simply different questions, and a headline about ancestral sleep answers only one of them.
What Captain AL took from it
I stopped counting hours years ago, and this research is the first thing that has made me feel less guilty about it. What I count instead is how many days in a row I managed to sleep at roughly the same body-clock time. On a good month that is most of them. On a month with two transatlantic pairings and a standby block, it is almost none, and I can feel the difference by the third week in a way that no total would show.
The habit I gave up: trying to bank sleep before an early. It never worked for me, and the regularity argument explains why better than willpower ever did. What replaced it is duller and more effective, which is protecting the same window whenever the roster leaves one, and treating the blackout curtain and the earplugs as equipment rather than comfort.
Questions crew are asking about this
How much sleep do airline crew actually need?
The general adult guidance has not changed: roughly seven to nine hours, with six to ten appropriate for some people. The 2026 research does not lower that figure. It shows that people living without electric light also sleep under eight hours, and that regularity and timing changed with industrialisation while total hours barely did. No study has established a separate figure for crew.
Does the new research mean eight hours is a myth?
It means eight hours was never established as a biological requirement. The Brain Medicine review found no evidential basis for it and reported that three societies living without electric light sleep in the low sevens or below. That is different from saying you personally need less. Individual need varies with age, genetics, health and workload.
Is split sleep as good as one long block?
Unknown, and that is the honest answer. The Brain Medicine authors state that nobody appears to have tested whether split sleep with reliable timing performs as well as consolidated sleep. Since split sleep is normal in this profession, that gap sits directly over the crew population.
Is the 6.4 to 7.8 hour window a target I should aim for?
Treat it as a broad signal, not a target. That range came from a single self-reported figure rounded to the nearest hour, and critics have noted that reporting an optimum to a fraction of an hour from that data overstates the precision. People also tend to over-report their sleep, which shifts the curve.
Does waking at 3am mean my ancestors slept in two blocks?
Probably not. The review found no consistent evidence of segmented or biphasic sleep in the three societies it examined, which undercuts the popular version of that story. A 03:00 waking on a layover is more usefully treated as circadian disruption than as heritage.
If eight hours is not required, can I bid for less rest?
No. These studies measure long-run health markers such as biological ageing and metabolic risk, not alertness on the flight deck. Alertness depends on hours awake and circadian timing, and it is governed by your operator’s rest requirements and fatigue risk management system, which this research does not change.
