Singapore is the easy layover: spotless, safe, and small enough to see properly in a day. The MRT gets you anywhere for a couple of dollars, and half the best stuff is free. Here is how to do a day off like a local.

Getting in from Changi

MRT: the East-West line runs from Changi to downtown in about 30 to 35 minutes for around 2 dollars. Tap a contactless card or phone at the gate, no top-up needed.
Taxi or Grab: roughly 25 to 45 dollars to the city, quick and painless if you are tired.

The must-sees (book ahead)

Gardens by the Bay: the Supertree Grove and the free nightly light show are the icons. Book the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome for the cooled conservatories.
Marina Bay Sands SkyPark: the 57th-floor observation deck has the skyline view (the famous infinity pool is for hotel guests only, so the deck is the public option).
Universal Studios Singapore: the Sentosa theme park, a solid half-day. Grab a timed ticket.
Singapore Oceanarium: the aquarium on Sentosa, reopened and expanded in 2025.

Hidden gems for your day off

Jewel Changi Rain Vortex: the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, right at the airport and free, no boarding pass needed.
Merlion Park: the lion-fish statue and the classic Marina Bay photo, free.
Singapore Botanic Gardens: a free UNESCO World Heritage garden, open early to late.
Chinatown and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple: free to enter the temple, modest dress.
Little India and Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple: colour, incense, and cheap great food.
Kampong Glam and Sultan Mosque: street art, shophouses, and Haji Lane, the Malay-Arab quarter.
Tiong Bahru: art-deco shophouses, indie cafes, and the city’s oldest housing estate.
Southern Ridges and Henderson Waves: a free treetop walk over the city’s highest pedestrian bridge.

Eat like a local

Hainanese chicken rice at a hawker centre like Maxwell or Lau Pa Sat.
A bowl of laksa and a plate of char kway teow.
Chilli crab if you have the time to sit down for it.
Kaya toast and a kopi for breakfast.

Best time to go

Year-round: hot and humid, always. There is no cool season.
February to April: usually the driest stretch.
November to January: the wettest, with daily downpours.

Stay sharp

Crime is almost nonexistent, but the laws are strict. Vaping is illegal with fines into the thousands, so do not bring a vape through Changi. Fines also apply for littering and jaywalking.
Tap a contactless card or EZ-Link on the MRT and buses, simple and cheap.
