Chicago is the great American city for a layover: world-class art, jaw-dropping architecture, a walkable downtown, and a train straight from the airport. Here is how to spend a day off like a local.

Getting in from O’Hare

CTA Blue Line: straight from O’Hare into the Loop in about 45 minutes, and it runs 24 hours. Trips from the airport carry a flat 5-dollar fare.

The must-sees (book ahead)

Architecture river cruise: the single best thing to do in Chicago, 90 minutes on the river with a docent. Book a cruise.
Willis Tower Skydeck: step onto the glass Ledge on the 103rd floor. Book a ticket.
Art Institute of Chicago: Monet, van Gogh, and Hopper’s Nighthawks in one collection.
Cloud Gate (The Bean): the mirror sculpture in Millennium Park, free and unmissable.

Hidden gems for your day off

Chicago Riverwalk: a free 1.25-mile walkway along the river, the city’s best free stroll.
Lincoln Park Zoo: free, every day of the year, in a lovely lakefront park.
Chicago Cultural Center: free concerts and exhibits under the world’s largest Tiffany glass dome.
Navy Pier: free to enter, with a Ferris wheel and summer fireworks over the lake.
360 Chicago: the old Hancock observatory, with the TILT platform that leans you out over the street.
National Museum of Mexican Art: a free, excellent museum in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Garfield Park Conservatory: a huge Victorian glasshouse of tropical plants, a warm escape in winter.

Captain AL’s tip: the architecture river cruise is the one paid thing every Chicago first-timer should do, it makes sense of the whole skyline in 90 minutes. Then go free: walk the Riverwalk and stand under the Bean. And a Chicago dog is never served with ketchup, do not ask.

Eat like a local

A slice of deep-dish. A pizza and food tour hits the classics.
A Chicago-style hot dog, dragged through the garden, no ketchup.
An Italian beef, dipped.
An Old Style or a Malört dare in a dive bar.

Best time to go

Summer and early fall: the lakefront comes alive, festivals everywhere.
Spring: mild and quieter.
Winter: genuinely cold with a fierce wind off the lake, dress for the wind chill.

Stay sharp

Stick to the Loop, River North, Streeterville, and Lincoln Park at night, and use a rideshare for unfamiliar blocks.
