What to Do by Layover Length
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Holland Boulevard, the airside stretch between Lounge 2 and Lounge 3, is the traditional rest and culture zone; parts of the terminal are being renovated, so check on the day which facilities are open.
5 to 8 hours: Take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and keep the loop simple: Dam Square and a stretch of the Canal Ring fit inside this window, and a short walk through Jordaan still leaves margin for the return and security.
8 to 24 hours: A full city layover is realistic: the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein, De Pijp for food, and dinner around Leidseplein, with the free GVB ferries behind Centraal as a zero-cost harbour view.
