Getting from Dulles Airport to Washington, D.C.: train, taxi, or rideshare?
The Silver Line does the work here. The Metro station sits at the end of a short indoor walkway from the terminal and runs one-seat into downtown, so there is no shuttle to chase and no transfer to miss. When the train has stopped for the night, Washington Flyer taxis take over.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Washington, D.C., from the Mall to the hotel cluster at the field
National Mall and Penn Quarter: Monuments and Smithsonian museums in one walkable band, with quick food never far off. The classic first-visit loop.

What to Do on a Layover in Washington, D.C., window by window
Under 5 hours: Stay airside. Terminal Wi-Fi is free, and the round trip downtown, plus the security queue on the way back, does not fit safely into a window this short.
5 to 9 hours: Pick one move and commit to it. Either the Silver Line to the National Mall, where a monument and museum loop works around a single pair of stations, or the short county bus hop to the Udvar-Hazy annex if you want the aviation fix. Then keep the return train time in view.
9 hours plus: Now a full downtown run is realistic: the Mall, one museum done properly, then dinner in Penn Quarter or Dupont Circle. The evening fare drop is on your side for the ride back.
