Vienna Airport to the City Centre: railjet, S7, the CAT coach, or the airport bus
Rail and express bus both serve the airport, and two dates matter this month. On 5 September the airport bus network grows from three lines to five, with new direct runs from Karlsplatz and Praterstern. On 7 September the S-Bahn main line closes between Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof for 14 months, Wien Mitte closes with it, and the airport S7 is cut back to St. Marx. The railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof keeps running through the works and stays the fast pick at 15 minutes, and the City Airport Train is already running as a premium coach rather than a train.

ÖBB gives the 15 minute run and the departure windows. The City of Vienna states that during the 14 month main line closure you still reach the airport by ÖBB long distance train from Wien Hauptbahnhof, and that the REX7 is rerouted that way as well, so this is the leg the works leave alone. No fare here, and that is deliberate: the VOR price list names the route and the price, not the train product, so the VOR fares sit on the S7 option instead. | |

You may still see the switch announced for 7 September 2026, the day the main line works start, but the coaches are already running. Mariahilf and the Naschmarkt: Market stalls, food, plus a long shopping street, in a loop compact enough to fit a short window.
Grinzing and Nussdorf: The wine village edge of the city, up on the vineyard slopes. Save it for the evening when the layover runs long.
What to Do on a Layover in Vienna, and whether five hours is enough while the main line closure is on
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Yes, the rail run into town is short, but immigration, the return leg, and the security queue eat the margin you came to spend.
5 to 9 hours: Pick one district and stop there: the old centre, or the Prater side for daylight and green space. The return buffer stays untouchable. While the main line closure lasts, add slack on top of it.
9 hours plus: A full Vienna day is realistic. Centre in the morning, a museum or the market in the afternoon, and if you want the slow version, the wine villages on the northern edge in the evening.
Crew Tips for Vienna Airport: the core zone catch, VOR fares, and where a bag waits in Terminal 3
Public transport payments: City tickets changed on 1 January 2026. A single now costs EUR 3,00 digital (reduced EUR 1,50), the 24 hour Vienna ticket EUR 9,70 digital, the 7 day ticket EUR 25,20 digital. Buying digital is the cheaper habit, because the city states a permanent price reduction of 5 percent on digital single tickets and digital short term passes.
The airport is outside the Vienna core zone: A city ticket does not cover the airport leg. From the VOR price list for Flughafen Wien: a single to Vienna including the core zone is EUR 5,50, the day ticket is EUR 14,70, and a single to the Vienna core zone boundary is EUR 2,30. Prices apply from 1 July 2026.
Validation and night service: Validate before you board, at the blue machines at underground entrances and on buses and trams. Vienna itself is one full core zone. More than 20 night bus lines run between 00:30 and 05:00, and on weekends and public holidays the underground runs all night.
SIM cards and connectivity: Austria has not allowed anonymous SIM activation since 1 January 2019. Prepaid or contract, both need identification, and the provider has to record name, academic title, and date of birth. Carry ID if you plan to buy a local SIM.
Taxis and solo travel: Take a taxi only from the rank directly in front of the arrivals hall, or from the City Transfer counters inside it. The airport warns that people who approach passengers in the arrivals hall for a ride are, in many cases, soliciting without the required business license. Walk past them.
Luggage storage: Baggage storage sits in Terminal 3, open daily 05:30 to 23:30. Per calendar day it is EUR 5,00 for a piece of hand luggage, EUR 10,00 for a piece of check-in luggage, EUR 8,00 for a safe, and EUR 3,00 for a clothing unit. Up to 18 months, if you ever need that.

How do I get from Vienna Airport to the city centre?
Four options, and two dates change the picture. ÖBB railjet and intercity trains run nonstop to Wien Hauptbahnhof in 15 minutes, twice an hour, and keep running through the works. The S7 suburban train goes every half hour with intermediate stops, on a VOR single of EUR 5,50 including the Vienna core zone, but on 7 September it is cut back to St. Marx and stops reaching Wien Mitte. The City Airport Train runs nonstop to Wien Mitte every 12 minutes between 07:00 and 19:00 and every 15 minutes at other times, at present as a premium coach in 21 minutes, for EUR 14,90 a single. And the Vienna Airport Bus takes 20 minutes to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz for EUR 11,00 one way, with direct lines from Karlsplatz and Praterstern added on 5 September.
How much is the train from Vienna Airport into Vienna?
EUR 5,50 for a VOR single from Flughafen Wien to Vienna including the city core zone, and EUR 14,70 for the matching day ticket. To the Vienna core zone boundary only, a single costs EUR 2,30. The City Airport Train sits outside that system and is priced separately: EUR 14,90 for a single, EUR 24,90 for a return, and neither a VOR nor a Vienna city ticket is valid on it.
How do I get to Vienna Airport late at night?
Take the bus. The Vienna Airport Bus holds the widest window. From 5 September the operator publishes VAB 4 from Karlsplatz, 03:09 to 22:39 to the airport and 04:30 to 01:00 back, and VAB 5 from Praterstern, 03:03 to 22:33 out and 04:42 to 01:12 back. Its timetables for VAB 1, VAB 2 and VAB 3 run only to 4 September, so check those three lines before you count on them. Railjets leave Vienna Main station from 05:42 until 22:42, and leave the airport from 06:33 until 23:03, plus a 00:02 departure. The City Airport Train runs from Wien Mitte 05:30 to 23:15 and from the airport 06:10 to 23:37, every 12 minutes between 07:00 and 19:00 and every 15 minutes at other times, at present as a premium coach.
Can you drink the tap water in Vienna?
Yes, and you can fill the bottle at the hotel tap. The City of Vienna states that Vienna drinking water is of outstanding quality. It comes from springs in the Lower Austrian and Styrian Alps and reaches the city without pumps, through galleries that use the natural drop in altitude. Hardness runs 6 to 12 degrees German hardness, and up to 20 in some districts.
