Airline Crew Layover Guide
Vancouver is one of North America’s easiest and most rewarding crew layover cities — scenic, clean, outdoorsy, and unusually efficient from the airport. Vancouver International Airport is directly connected to the city by the Canada Line, which makes downtown access simple even on a shorter layover.

Getting from YVR to the City
Vancouver International Airport is one of the easiest major airports in North America for crew transfers. For most layovers, the Canada Line is the best option unless you have heavy luggage or a hotel that is not rail-friendly.
Canada Line — recommended The Canada Line connects YVR to downtown Vancouver in under 30 minutes and to downtown Richmond in 18 minutes.
- Travel time to downtown Vancouver: under 30 minutes
- Travel time to downtown Richmond: 18 minutes
- YVR departures are subject to a $5 YVR Airport AddFare on top of the regular fare
- The AddFare applies on journeys starting at YVR-Airport, Sea Island Centre, or Templeton and continuing beyond Bridgeport
- Tap to pay is accepted with contactless debit or credit cards
- Best for: downtown hotels, light luggage, and predictable transfers
Taxi Taxis are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the official taxi stands at International Arrivals Level 2 and Domestic Arrivals Level 2. YVR states that these stands are served by licensed taxi operators.
- Use only the official taxi stands
- Taxi stands are at International Arrivals Level 2 and Domestic Arrivals Level 2
- Best for: door-to-door hotel transfer and heavier luggage
Rideshare YVR authorises Lyft and Uber as ride-app providers. Pick-up areas are at International Arrivals Level 2, Domestic Arrivals Level 2, and the South Terminal.
Pro tip for crew: If your hotel is downtown, the Canada Line is usually the smartest option. If you are staying outside downtown or arriving tired with luggage, a taxi or rideshare may be the better trade-off.
Best Areas for Crew Stays in Vancouver
Downtown / Waterfront The best all-round choice for most crew — highly walkable, great food, harbour views, and easy Canada Line access. Best for first-time layovers.
Yaletown One of the strongest crew districts — modern, restaurant-heavy, and still practical for airport transfers. Good for shorter premium stays.
Coal Harbour Better for a quieter upscale layover with water and mountain views. Excellent for rest-focused stops.
Richmond Most practical if you want to stay closer to the airport, especially on a very short layover. Better for convenience than for the full Vancouver experience.
What to Do on a Layover in Vancouver
Under 8 hours — one area only Choose downtown, Yaletown, or the waterfront. Vancouver is very easy to enjoy without trying to cover too much ground.
8–16 hours — classic Vancouver half-day Combine the waterfront, downtown, and a proper meal with a scenic walk. Vancouver’s strength is atmosphere more than rushing between landmarks.
16–48 hours — fuller layover experience Add Stanley Park, Granville Island, or a longer seawall walk depending on weather and energy. Vancouver works especially well for crew who want fresh air, good coffee, and a low-stress city stop.
Crew Tips for Vancouver
Weather: Vancouver can change quickly from clear to wet, especially outside summer. A light waterproof layer is usually a smart idea.
Transport: Public transport is easy by North American standards, and downtown access from the airport is genuinely straightforward. This makes Vancouver one of the better cities for short crew outings.
Costs: Vancouver is not a cheap city, especially for hotels, restaurants, and casual coffee stops in prime areas. Plan with that in mind.
Safety: Vancouver is manageable for crew, but normal city awareness still matters, especially late at night and around some transport areas.
Airport help: YVR has 24-hour Customer Care available by phone at 604 207 7077.
Drinking Water
Vancouver tap water is generally excellent and widely used. Bottled water is usually unnecessary unless you simply prefer it.
