The Commuter Line Basoetta train is the one option that runs to a clock. Ride-hailing and registered taxis cover the hours the train does not, and both of them inherit Jakarta traffic. Respect it in both directions.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Jakarta, from the Thamrin towers down to Kemang
Thamrin and Sudirman: The central business spine, and BNI City station sits on it, so the train puts you straight among the hotel towers, the malls, and Bundaran HI.
Menteng: The old diplomatic quarter. Quiet streets, big trees, still close in.
Kota Tua (Old Town): The Dutch colonial square with its museums around it, and the Jakarta photo everyone comes home with.
Kemang: South Jakarta’s cafe and restaurant strip, where the evening runs slow and late.
Glodok: Chinatown. Street food and temples packed into a few walkable blocks.
What to Do on a Jakarta Layover once you subtract the traffic in both directions
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Not the popular answer, but immigration plus the ride back eat most of a short window, and the road into town is a traffic gamble in both directions.
5 to 9 hours: One tight loop, and only one. Train in, pick a single district (a stretch of Thamrin or the Old Town square), sit down for one proper Indonesian meal, then head back with a buffer wider than feels necessary.
9 hours plus: Now you can actually see the place. Kota Tua, the Monas area, and dinner in Menteng or Kemang. Plan the ride back around the evening rush instead of through it.
Crew Tips for Jakarta and Soekarno-Hatta Airport, from the card-only ticket machines to the rainy-season road back
Airport train ticketing: Cash buys nothing at the station vending machines. They take QRIS, debit, or credit cards only, and a KMT stored-value card taps you through the gate Tap and Go style provided it holds at least IDR 70,000. Online booking runs through the Access by KAI app.
Registered taxis: Registered companies only: Bluebird, Silverbird, or Express. Check the driver’s identity before you get in, and on app rides confirm the driver matches the app and share your journey with a friend through it. The ones to walk past are the unofficial drivers who work arrivals on foot and claim an app affiliation.
Grab pickup: Order in the app, then walk to the official pickup point it shows for your terminal. Terminal 1 has a marked GrabCar pickup point at arrivals. No GrabBike here: the motorcycles do not do airport pickups, and fares are fixed upfront for everything except GrabTaxi.
QRIS payments: Bank Indonesia lists cross-border QRIS as live in both directions with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and China. Crew based in any of those markets can pay an Indonesian QRIS merchant straight from a participating home app, with the exchange converted on the spot. The ceiling is IDR 10,000,000 per transaction, the same as domestic QRIS.
Rainy-season flooding: October to March is the rainy season, and UK government advice warns that the main toll road to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, along with other major Jakarta roads, can be affected by flooding. Do not price the ride back on a dry-day estimate. Pad it.
