Hong Kong is one of the great layover cities: fast, dense, safe, and stacked vertically so you can see a lot in a day. Grab an Octopus card the moment you land and the whole place opens up. Here is how to do a day off like a local.
Getting in from HKG
- Airport Express: to Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes, trains every 10 minutes, around HK$120 with Octopus, plus a free shuttle bus on to major hotels.
- Get an Octopus card first: sold at the airport, it pays for the trains, buses, ferries, and the corner shop.
The must-sees (book ahead)
- Victoria Peak and the Peak Tram: the rebuilt funicular up to the classic skyline view. Book the tram and Sky Terrace.
- Star Ferry: the harbour crossing between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui for about HK$5, the cheapest great view in Asia.
- Big Buddha and Ngong Ping 360: the giant seated Buddha on Lantau, reached by a long cable car. Book a cable-car tour that also takes in Tai O.
