Why book through DiscoverCars

  • Save up to 70% on car rentals worldwide
  • Over 3,700 pickup locations in 150+ countries
  • No hidden fees, free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup
  • 24/7 multilingual support
  • Economy to luxury vehicles for any trip
  • Open to everyone, book for family and friends too, no airline ID needed
Captain’s recommendation: on the results page, only pick a rental company rated 8.0 or higher. The price gap with a lower-rated desk is usually small, but a well-rated supplier means a faster pickup, a fair fuel policy, and far fewer surprises at the counter.

Before you book

Good to know:
No code or membership needed, the price you see is the deal.
Prices vary by supplier, date, and location.
Check each supplier’s terms and cancellation policy on the booking page.
Compare a few options, the cheapest is not always the best cover.

Prefer a dedicated crew rate?

DiscoverCars is the best all-round public deal. For a dedicated airline crew rate in North America, Alamo gives eligible crew up to 30% off. You can also read our car rental tips for crew.

Crew tips for Shanghai, China

  • Shanghai Layover Guide
  • Tickets for trains, buses, ferries, charters in Southeast Asia

Heads-up: a few booking links below are affiliate links. Booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you.

Shanghai rewards a layover, but China takes a little prep the first time. Sort three things before you land and the city opens right up. Here is how to do a day off like a local.

Before you land (do this on home wifi)

  • Visa-free transit: China’s 240-hour visa-free transit covers many nationalities through Shanghai with an onward ticket to a third country. Confirm your passport is on the current list before you count on it.
  • Payments: Western cards barely work at the counter. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and link your card before you arrive, and use a physical card, not a virtual one.
  • Apps: Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram are blocked in mainland China, so install and test a VPN before departure, not after.

Getting in from Pudong

  • Maglev: the magnetic-levitation train covers 30 km to Longyang Road in 8 minutes at up to 300 km/h, about 50 yuan, then change to Metro line 2.
  • Metro line 2: runs all the way from the airport across the city (the Bund, Nanjing Road, People’s Square) in about an hour for a few yuan.

The must-sees (book ahead)

  • The Bund: the colonial waterfront facing the Pudong skyline, free and best at dusk when the towers light up.
  • Shanghai Tower: the observation deck on the 118th floor, the world’s highest. Book a ticket.
  • Yu Garden: a Ming-dynasty classical garden in the Old City, all pavilions and rockeries.
  • See it all in a day? A private highlights tour stitches the Bund, the Tower, and Yu Garden together.

Hidden gems for your day off

  • Tianzifang: a warren of old lane houses in the French Concession, now galleries and cafes.
  • French Concession: tree-lined streets of Art Deco and colonial villas, made for a slow walk.
  • Jade Buddha Temple: an active temple with two jade Buddha statues.
  • Zhujiajiao Water Town: a 400-year-old canal town an hour out on Metro line 17. Book a day trip.
  • Propaganda Poster Art Centre: a basement gallery of original Mao-era posters.
  • Jewish Refugees Museum: the moving story of the 25,000 refugees Shanghai sheltered, in the restored Ohel Moshe synagogue.
  • Shanghai Museum East: the vast new Pudong branch of the city museum, free with a reservation.

Captain AL’s tip: the whole trip lives or dies on the three things above, visa transit, Alipay or WeChat Pay, and a VPN, so sort them on home wifi, never at a shop counter in Pudong. Get those right and Shanghai is one of the easiest big cities in the world for a day off.

Eat like a local

  • Xiaolongbao, the soup dumplings Shanghai is famous for.
  • Shengjianbao, crispy-bottomed pan-fried pork buns.
  • Street jianbing, the savoury breakfast crepe.
  • A bowl of hongshao braised pork.

Best time to go

  • Spring and fall: mild and the most comfortable.
  • Summer: hot and very humid.
  • Winter: cold and damp, but the museums are warm and quiet.

Stay sharp

  • Shanghai is a very safe city, so the real friction is digital, get the payments and VPN sorted before you land.
  • The Maglev is worth the 8 minutes just for the novelty of hitting 300 km/h on the way to town.
