Getting from Ontario International Airport into town: bus, Metrolink, or a car?
This is a car region and the data says so plainly. Two Omnitrans bus routes call at the terminals, one local and one shuttle to the Metrolink station, and beyond that the train does the distance to Los Angeles. There is no rail platform at the terminal and no train you can walk to.

Best Areas for Crew Stays, from Ontario Mills next to the field to the far end of the Metrolink line
Ontario Mills and Inland Empire Boulevard: The retail and chain-dining cluster just east of the field, and the nearest cluster Route 61 reaches from the terminals.
Holt Boulevard and downtown Ontario: The older city core west of the airport, strung along the boulevard Route 61 runs end to end; everyday Ontario rather than a visitor district.
Rancho Cucamonga: Where the ONT Connect bus meets the Metrolink line, so it works as the pivot point for anything further out rather than as a destination in itself.
Claremont and Montclair: Two San Bernardino Line stops west of Rancho Cucamonga, about 19 and 14 minutes along, if you want to break the trip short of Los Angeles.
Downtown Los Angeles: The far end of the line at L.A. Union Station, and a full day commitment from ONT rather than a quick hop.
What to Do on a Layover in Ontario, California: how long have you got?
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Every move from here starts with a bus that runs on its own timetable, and the return leg is the part that bites.
5 to 9 hours: One local move, no more. Route 61 to Ontario Mills is about 12 to 14 minutes each way and runs every 15 minutes on weekdays, which is the only pairing here that leaves real slack. Los Angeles does not fit in this window once you count the bus at both ends.
9 hours plus: Los Angeles becomes possible: ONT Connect to Rancho Cucamonga, then about 1 h 20 min on the San Bernardino Line to L.A. Union Station. Work backwards from the return train rather than forwards from the arrival, because the last useful connection is a lot earlier than the last train.
Crew Tips for Ontario, California, from the bus fare to the summer heat
Paying for the bus: Omnitrans wants exact-fare cash on board or a pass bought on your phone in the Transit or Moovit app. A single ride is USD 2.00 and a 1-day pass USD 6.00, so two trips already pay for the day pass. Drivers do not give change.
One ticket to Los Angeles: Metrolink lists ONT Connect as a ticketed origin, so you can buy through to L.A. Union Station instead of the legs separately, and each Metrolink ticket includes one free transfer from the ONT Connect bus. We could not read exact fares, because Metrolink prices only through its own fare tool, so check the current one-way and SoCal Day Pass price in the Metrolink app before you travel.
The timing traps: last buses and the return connection: The last weekday train out of L.A. Union Station leaves at 9:38 pm and reaches Rancho Cucamonga at 11:01 pm, and the last ONT Connect bus toward the airport leaves that same station at 11:08 pm, a workable but tight 7-minute connection. The train before that leaves L.A. Union Station at 7:38 pm and arrives 9:01 pm, with no 8:38 pm departure in between, so treat 7:38 pm as your comfortable last train if you would rather not cut it close. On Saturdays and Sundays the last bus toward the airport leaves Rancho Cucamonga at 10:58 pm. Separately, Route 61 is the local bus and it thins out at weekends: every 20 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays, and on Sundays the last departures at the terminals are much earlier, 7:14 pm eastbound and 7:31 pm westbound.
Heat is an operational factor here: This is not coastal California. The National Weather Service climate summary for Ontario International Airport gives a normal July average maximum of 93.8 F (about 34 C), and in July 2026 the airport reached 90 F (32 C) or higher on 28 days, peaking at 102 F (39 C). Carry water and do not plan long walks between bus stops in the afternoon.
Police, and which number is which: Dial 911 for an emergency. For anything else the City publishes two numbers without labelling either as a 24 hour non-emergency line: (909) 395-2001 is the Police listing and what the department calls its general info line, staffed Monday to Friday 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and weekends 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and (909) 986-6711 is the number the department gives to reach an officer when a report cannot be filed online.
Ground logistics at a car-first airport: Terminal 2 is 2500 E. Airport Drive and Terminal 4 is 2900 E. Airport Drive, both Ontario, CA 91761; international arrivals and pick-up is a separate building at 2222 International Way, and the Rental Car Center is at 3450 East Airport Drive near Haven Avenue. If someone is collecting you, the cell phone waiting lot at 3350 John Bangs Drive is free for up to an hour, and by road from Los Angeles it is Interstate 10 east to the Archibald Avenue exit. One thing to plan around: there is no general left-luggage service here. The only storage the airport documents is inside the USO lounge at 1940 East Moore Way, and the USO states its services are for troops, veterans and their families, so if you are not eligible, keep the bag with you or leave it at the hotel.
