Getting from Malpensa Airport into central Milan: which ride makes sense, and why Linate and Bergamo are a different trip entirely
Malpensa is the far airport: 49 km of railway from Milano Centrale, in the province of Varese, not in the city. The Malpensa Express does the work, from a station inside each terminal, and it splits into two branches with two different Milan stations and two different last trains. Coaches cover the hours the train does not. Linate and Bergamo are separate airports with separate products, and nothing on this page carries over to them. No coach operator publishes the fare you pay at the Malpensa stop, so you cannot check it before you board. Buy your coach ticket online instead.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Milan, from the Duomo and Brera to the canals and the towers at Porta Nuova
Duomo and the centro storico: The cathedral, the Galleria and the main shopping streets, a short metro ride from both Cadorna and Centrale and the obvious first stop on a short window.
Brera: Narrow streets, the art academy and the quieter cafe blocks north of the Duomo, walkable from the centre and easy to combine with it.
Navigli: The canal district south west of the centre, an evening neighborhood of bars and restaurants along the water rather than a sightseeing one.
Porta Nuova and Isola: The new towers, the raised gardens and the bars around Isola, all within walking distance of Milano Porta Garibaldi, which is a stop on the Centrale branch of the airport train.
Milano Centrale and Cadorna: The two arrival hubs themselves, useful to know as orientation points because the airport train uses one or the other, never both on the same run.
What to Do on a Layover in Milan, from a short sit at Malpensa to a full day in the city
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Malpensa sits 49 km of railway from Milano Centrale, so a return to the city and back costs at least an hour and a half of travel before you have seen anything, and the airport Wi-Fi is free and unlimited.
5 to 9 hours: One branch, one destination, back the same way. Cadorna is the shorter run and puts you closest to the centre; Centrale is longer but is where the coaches also go. Fix your return train before you leave the platform, and remember the two branches end at different times.
9 hours plus: A real city run works: the centre plus one neighborhood beyond it and a proper meal. If the evening runs long, the Cadorna branch keeps going after the Centrale branch has finished, and the coaches to Milano Centrale run later still.
Crew Tips for Milan and Malpensa Airport
Paying for transit inside Milan: The city ticket is EUR 2,20 and is valid for 90 minutes from the first validation, with as many surface journeys as you like and re-entry through the metro turnstiles. A single day ticket is EUR 7,60 for 24 hours, a 3 day ticket is EUR 15,50, and a carnet of 10 is EUR 19,50. All of these cover zone Mi1-Mi3, which is Milan plus 21 neighboring municipalities, and they are valid on all ATM metro and surface lines and on Trenord suburban lines inside that zone. Children under 14 travel free across the whole integrated zone. On the metro and some buses you can tap a contactless card instead of buying a ticket.
Your Milan ticket does not reach Malpensa: This is the trap that catches crew. Malpensa is in the province of Varese, outside the Milano and Monza Brianza integrated fare zone, and Trenord’s own notice 030/2026 sets out in a table which tickets may be used to or from the airport: a Malpensa fare ticket, yes; an ordinary regional rail ticket, no; an STIBM integrated ticket, no. Trenord states it plainly as well: to travel to or from Malpensa T1 and T2 you must hold an airport fare ticket. A Malpensa Express ticket works the other way round too, only on trains that serve the airport, so it does not let you ride around Milan.
Where to buy the airport train ticket, and when the desks close: Buy online at trenord.it or malpensaexpress.it, in the Trenord app, at station machines, at retailers, or at the desks inside the airport. Treat the desks as closing by 20:50: that is the earliest closing time any official page prints for the Trenord station ticket office, while Trenord’s own pages print 21:00 for the station office and 21:00 for the Arrivals office at Terminal 1. For a late train, buy in the app; an online ticket needs a QR code that is generated from 00:01 on the day of use.
Wi-Fi at Malpensa: Malpensa Free Wi-Fi is completely free, needs no registration, has no time limit and is stated to give up to 20 Mbps. That covers a crew call or a download without buying anything.
Refilling a bottle at Malpensa: The airport has eleven water fountains with refrigerated drinking water, eight in Terminal 1 and three in Terminal 2, in both boarding and arrival areas, and the operator states you are welcome to drink from them or fill your water bottles. In Terminal 1 they are signposted near Customs Office A, in the Boarding A waiting area, past passport control towards gates B50 to B59 and towards gates B71 to B83, and near the restrooms in the Central Satellite, the North Satellite and at baggage reclaim belts 5 and 6 and 7. In Terminal 2 they are past the security checkpoints, at gate D09 and before baggage reclaim.
The other two Milan airports: Nothing above carries over. Linate (LIN) is the close one and now has the metro: SEA states the M4 blue line runs daily from 05:40 to 00:30 and reaches Linate from the centre of Milan in 12 minutes, with contactless tap in and tap out, and the NM4 night bus covering the hours the metro is closed. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is not in Milan at all: the operator Orio Shuttle prices its Linea 1 coach from Bergamo Airport to Milano Centrale at EUR 10 with a 50 minute run time, roughly every 30 minutes from 05:20 to 23:50 plus a handful of overnight departures, on the timetable it published for 2 September 2026. Between BGY and Malpensa, Orio Shuttle runs a Linea 3 coach from Bergamo city via the airport and Monza at EUR 25, and the Bergamo city to Malpensa legs it published for that date ran 105 to 125 minutes.

Can I use a Milan metro ticket to get to Malpensa airport?
No. Malpensa is outside the Milano and Monza Brianza integrated fare zone, and Trenord’s notice 030/2026 states that neither an STIBM integrated ticket nor an ordinary regional rail ticket may be used to or from Malpensa Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. You need an airport fare ticket, which is EUR 15,00 for an adult single. The reverse also applies: a Malpensa Express ticket is only valid on trains serving the airport and does not let you travel around Milan.
Is tap water safe to drink in Milan?
Yes. ATS Milano, the metropolitan health agency, concludes in its 2025 drinking water report that its checks confirm the good quality of the water supplied by the drinking water service and that it complies with current law, and it advises choosing tap water. It monitored 1,417 control points and took 4,545 samples in 2025. Malpensa itself has eleven fountains of refrigerated drinking water, eight in Terminal 1 and three in Terminal 2, and the airport invites passengers to fill their bottles.
