Getting from AGP Airport into Malaga city centre: the Cercanias train, the airport bus, or a taxi?
Two different products run between the terminal and the centre, and they are not interchangeable. The Cercanias C-1 train and the EMT line A bus have different operators, different fares, different stops and different last services. The train is faster and cheaper; the bus reaches more of the centre and keeps going later at night.

Centro Historico and Calle Larios: The cathedral, the Alcazaba and the marble shopping street, all walkable from the Alameda and the Paseo del Parque, which is where both the train and the airport bus put you down.
Soho and Muelle Uno: The street art quarter behind the Alameda running into the redeveloped port promenade, the shortest walk from the centre to the water.
La Malagueta: The city beach immediately east of the port, with the bullring and the seafront restaurants, close enough for a short window.
Pedregalejo and El Palo: Old fishing neighbourhoods further east along the coast, low rise and slower, the local end of the beach rather than the postcard end.
Torremolinos and Benalmadena: The Costa del Sol resort strip southwest of the airport, sitting on the same C-1 line as the terminal, so you reach it without changing trains.
What to Do on a Layover in Malaga, from a short sit in the terminal to the old town and the city beach
Under 5 hours: Stay airside or stay close. The train is quick, but a round trip to the centre plus screening on the way back eats a short window, and the free airport Wi-Fi will do more for you than a rushed walk.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move: the C-1 to Malaga-Centro Alameda, the old town and the port promenade on foot, and the same line back. Fix the train you intend to catch back before you leave the platform.
9 hours plus: Enough for the centre plus one thing beyond it, either the beach at La Malagueta or a stop down the line at Torremolinos or Benalmadena, with a proper meal, and still be back well before the last train.
Crew Tips for Malaga and AGP Airport: validating the train ticket, the separate airport bus fare, and the taxi minimum
Paying for the train: Single tickets are sold at station ticket offices and Cercanias vending machines, and you have two hours to start the journey after buying. You can also skip the ticket entirely and pay at the gate with a contactless bank card or your phone. Whichever you use, validate at the entry station and at the exit station: Renfe states plainly that not validating is charged as the maximum fare for every zone in the network. From the fifth journey in a calendar month on the same card, Renfe takes 40 percent off the single fare automatically.
Paying for the airport bus: The line A bus is a flat EUR 4,00 and luggage travels free. You can pay cash to the driver, tap a Visa or Mastercard as you board (there is no tap off), buy a QR ticket in the EMT Malaga app and validate it on the bus, or buy the ticket at the booth beside the exit door of the arrivals terminal. That ticket covers one journey, out or back, and allows no transfer. It is a separate fare from EMT’s ordinary city bus ticket, which is EUR 1,40 and which EMT states is valid on every line except line A, so do not expect a normal bus ticket to work on it.
Connectivity: Airport Wi-Fi is free. Connect to the network named Airport Free Wifi Aena, then use the welcome portal with your email address as a guest or with an Aena Club account. You get 15 minutes of internet to confirm the email, and once the account is verified the connection has no time limit.
Luggage storage: There is a left luggage desk at the airport, run by Security System Plastic Protection, open 08:00 to 20:00 and reachable on (+34) 653 444 747. Aena publishes no price for it, so ask when you drop the bag, and note the closing time if your report is late in the evening.
