The NBO crew card

Fastest into town Kenya Railways runs the NCR bus between JKIA and Embakasi Village Railway Station. KES 50 on board, 15 to 30 min on the July 2025 timetable. It stops at the railway station, not in the city center, so the trip carries on by commuter train
Night option Daytime only. The first NCR bus leaves the airport 06:00 and the last bus back to the airport leaves Embakasi Village 20:35. After that, app rides
Payments Carry KES cash for the Nairobi Expressway toll. Press the voucher button at the entry station, then pay at exit in cash or mobile money. A tap-and-go MTC card or an ETC tag keeps it cashless and non-stop
Tap water Bottled, boiled, or filtered. UK travel health advice for Kenya asks every traveler to take care with personal hygiene and with food and water, and its prevention advice is to drink water that is boiled, filtered, or bottled
Emergency 999 / 112 (999 and 112 are Kenya’s national emergency numbers, assigned to the police; the police also list 911. For medical help dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.)
Solo & at night Violent crime is frequent in Kenya’s large cities: mugging, armed robbery, and carjacking. Do not walk alone in isolated areas, daylight included, and count Eastleigh, the Central Business District, and informal settlements as elevated-risk areas
Crew knows The bus and the train are KES 50 each, so KES 100 in total, against the KES 410 gazetted toll a saloon car pays on the Expressway to Westlands before VAT. Kenya Railways publishes no departure time from Embakasi Village, so you pay the saving back in waiting

Getting from Jomo Kenyatta Airport to Nairobi: the bus, the train, and the app cars

No railway reaches the terminal. That leaves two honest options: a ride-hailing car door to door, or the Kenya Railways bus to Embakasi Village Railway Station, where the commuter line carries on to Nairobi Central Station. Cheap, but sparse.

👉 Swipe sideways to see the full table

Mode Time Cost Good to know
NCR airport bus to Embakasi Village station (Kenya Railways) about 15 to 30 min per the timetable
12 departures each way per day: from the airport 06:00 to 18:50, from Embakasi Village 06:20 to 20:35, no fixed interval
KES 50 flat, ticket bought on board Stops at Embakasi Village Railway Station, the Cargo Area, and Central Square. First bus out of the airport 06:00, last bus back to the airport off Embakasi Village 20:35. It feeds the commuter trains. It is not a one-seat ride into town.
Commuter train, Embakasi Village to Nairobi Central Station (Kenya Railways) NCR passenger trains usually run Monday to Friday; DMU trains also run on weekends and public holidays KES 50 on the Kenya Railways fare list for Embakasi Kenya Railways lists Embakasi services at 18:00, 18:30 (DMU), and 20:00 (DMU2), never says which direction they run, and publishes no departure time from Embakasi Village toward Nairobi Central Station. So treat the connection as unscheduled: ask at the station, and expect a wait once the bus drops you. No official source publishes a journey time either.
Ride-hailing (Uber) real-time estimate in the app before you request; tolls and city fees are named fare factors Uber serves NBO. Drop-off is curbside at the terminal you name in the request, and if you do not know the terminal you can enter your airline instead. Uber Reserve goes further: booking up to 90 days ahead, flight tracking, the price up front, and free cancellation until one hour before pickup.
Ride-hailing (Bolt) Bolt covers Nairobi and states you can request a ride to and from the Nairobi airports in the app. What it does not publish on that page is any fare, price-display, or journey-time figure. Keep it on the phone anyway: a second app earns its space when surge or driver supply turns against you.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Nairobi: where to base yourself

Westlands: Malls, international hotels, and restaurants packed tight northwest of the center. The usual crew-hotel zone.

Kilimani: Leafy residential grid with apartment hotels and cafes. Quieter than the center.

Upper Hill: Offices and conference hotels between the center and the southern highways. The business district.

Karen: Green and spread out on the city’s southwest edge, and the calm end of Nairobi.

Gigiri: Embassy and UN quarter in the north, diplomatic in feel, with the Village Market area attached.

What to Do on a Layover in Nairobi: how long have you got?

Under 5 hours: Stay on airport grounds. Nairobi traffic swings road times hard, and the rail-bus link runs a sparse timetable, so a city dash is a gamble. Rest and eat at the terminal, and walk your legs loose there.

5 to 9 hours: Enough for one anchor. A sit-down meal in Westlands or Kilimani, or a green break on the Karen side. Ride door to door, keep one eye on the traffic, and fix your turnaround time before you leave the airport.

9 hours plus: A real Nairobi day fits: morning on the Karen side, afternoon coffee in Westlands or Kilimani, dinner near the hotel. Build slack into the airport return. Protest days and rush hour can eat an hour without warning.

Crew Tips for Nairobi

Rail-bus payment: You pay on board the NCR airport bus, KES 50 flat to Embakasi Village station, and no advance ticket is needed. The fare is not what limits this route. The timetable is.

Expressway toll: Car rides into town can take the tolled Nairobi Expressway. Gazetted base rates for a saloon car (Class 3, excluding VAT): KES 410 JKIA to Westlands, and KES 330 JKIA to Haile Selassie at the edge of the center. The notice allows CPI and exchange-rate adjustment, so what you are charged can sit slightly higher than the gazette.

Safety pattern: UK government advice for Kenya reports frequent incidents of violent crime in the large cities, mugging, armed robbery, and carjacking among them. Do not walk alone in isolated areas, daylight included, and count Eastleigh, the Central Business District, and informal settlements as elevated-risk areas. Protests are common, in Nairobi in particular, along with demonstrations and strikes, and they can lead to violence.

SIM cards: SIM registration is mandatory under Kenyan law. Before registering a subscriber the operator must seek production of original identification documents, which for a foreigner means a valid passport or Foreign National Registration Certificate, and it must verify those documents against the relevant government database. Services on a non-compliant registration are suspended, and the SIM is deactivated after ninety days of suspension. So bring the physical passport into the shop.

Health basics: Malaria risk is very low in the city of Nairobi itself, per the UK’s official travel health service. The standing Kenya advice still asks for care with personal hygiene and with food and water, since typhoid and hepatitis A spread through contaminated food and water.

Medical emergency: Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. If you are referred to a medical facility for treatment, call your insurer fast.

Emergency Numbers for Nairobi and Kenya

👉 Swipe sideways if the numbers do not fit

Emergency (police; ask for ambulance or fire) 999 or 112
National Police Service headquarters +254 20 222 1969
Kenya country code (calling from abroad) +254

Save these before you fly; numbers work from any phone.

How do you get from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi city center?

No railway reaches the terminal. The budget route is the Kenya Railways NCR bus to Embakasi Village Railway Station (KES 50 bought on board, about 15 to 30 minutes), then the commuter line on to Nairobi Central Station, where Kenya Railways lists the Embakasi fare at KES 50. One catch: Kenya Railways publishes no departure time from Embakasi Village toward town, so ask at the station and allow a wait. Door to door is the simpler answer. Uber serves NBO with a fare estimate in the app before you request, and Bolt states you can request rides to and from the Nairobi airports.

Is Uber available at Nairobi Airport?

Yes, Uber serves NBO. You set the terminal when requesting, or enter your airline if you are not sure which one you are on. Uber Reserve books up to 90 days ahead with flight tracking, shows the price up front, and allows free cancellation until one hour before pickup. Bolt states you can request rides to and from the Nairobi airports too, so two apps on the phone means a fallback.

Is Nairobi safe for airline crew on a layover?

Treat Nairobi as a door-to-door city. UK government advice reports frequent incidents of violent crime in the large cities, mugging, armed robbery, and carjacking among them, and says to avoid walking alone in isolated areas, daylight included. Eastleigh, the Central Business District, and informal settlements count as elevated-risk areas. Protests are common in Nairobi and can lead to violence, so stay away from them.

Can you drink tap water in Nairobi?

Stick to bottled, boiled, or filtered water. The UK’s official travel health service asks every traveler to Kenya to take care with personal hygiene and with food and water, and its prevention advice says to drink water that is boiled, filtered, or bottled, since typhoid and hepatitis A spread through contaminated food and water. No official source rates Nairobi tap water at the tap, so the cautious default stands.

What is the emergency number in Kenya?

999 and 112 are the national emergency numbers, both assigned to the police, and the police also list 911. For a medical emergency, dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. Kenya’s country code is +254.
