The railway station sits directly beneath the terminal, so the train does almost all the work: seven minutes and you are at Geneve-Cornavin in the middle of the city. Buses and trams leave from the check-in level beside the station, and taxis run on regulated flat fares rather than a meter for the common destinations. Check the last train on the station board before you go into town. No official source publishes first or last times for the regular service. Taxis wait all night.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Geneva, from the old town and the lake shore to the hotel belt in the international quarter
Vieille-Ville and the Rues Basses: The old town on its hill and the shopping streets below it, the standard first walk and all of it on foot from Cornavin.
Paquis: The dense, mixed quarter between Cornavin station and the lake, where the cheapest eating in the centre is and where the lake baths sit at the end of the jetty.
Eaux-Vives and the left bank shore: Lakeside promenade and parks out towards the Jet d’Eau, the easy loop when the weather holds and you do not want to think.
Carouge: A separate small town in feel, south across the Arve, low houses and courtyards, worth the tram ride on a longer window.
Grand-Saconnex and the international quarter: The UN and the agencies sit between the airport and the city, and so does most of the airport hotel belt, which is where a lot of crew nights actually happen.
What to Do on a Layover in Geneva, from a short sit in the terminal to a full day in the city
Under 5 hours: Stay airside or close to it. The airport Wi-Fi is free and the terminal is small, and a round trip plus a second pass through security does not sit comfortably inside a short window even with a seven minute train.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move works. Train to Geneve-Cornavin, the Rues Basses and the old town on foot, the lake if you have the light, and back on the same line. Fix the return train in your head before you leave the platform.
9 hours plus: A full city run is realistic: the centre, the lakeside out towards the Jet d’Eau, and one thing beyond it such as Carouge or the international quarter, with a proper meal in between. Check what runs late before you commit to the far end of the evening.
Crew Tips for Geneva and Geneva Airport
Paying for transit: Buy before you board. The unireso zone 10 ticket covers all of Geneva and costs CHF 3.00 in second class for 60 minutes, or CHF 5.40 in first. A saut de puce, up to three stops inside zone 10 with no return and no connection, not valid on trains or coaches and to be completed within 10 minutes, is CHF 2.00. A day pass is CHF 10.00, or CHF 8.00 if you buy it from 9 a.m. The same ticket is valid on tpg buses and trams, CFF trains and the Mouettes Genevoises boats, so one ticket carries you across modes inside its hour.
The free arrival ticket is gone: Older guides still promise a free public transport ticket from a machine in the baggage hall at Geneva Airport. It no longer exists. The airport states plainly that since January 1, 2022 the free bus and train ticket on the unireso network previously offered by Geneve Aeroport to arriving passengers has been discontinued. The ticket machine in the baggage reclaim area is still there, but it now sells you a ticket like any other. Budget CHF 3.00 for the ride into town, or check the hotel card below before you pay anything at all.
Free travel if your layover hotel is in Geneva: This is the one to check before you buy anything. tpg states that people visiting Geneva and staying in a Geneva accommodation establishment, hotel or youth hostel, travel free of charge on public transport in unireso zone 10 for the duration of their stay, on buses, tramways, trains and the Mouettes Genevoises in the canton of Geneva, Celigny excepted. The Geneva Transport Card is issued in the name of the booking holder and sent by email three days before arrival, and several people can be grouped on one card provided they travel together. If crew accommodation is booked in Geneva, ask whether the card came with the booking before you feed the ticket machine.
Luggage storage: Left luggage is in the CFF railway station under the terminal, not in the terminal itself. The lockers are in the station shopping gallery (galerie marchande 1 and 2) and are open every day from 03:30 to 00:30. The minimum rate covers up to six hours and runs from CHF 5.00 for a small locker to CHF 15.00 for the largest, depending on size and season, with a maximum rental of 96 hours. The airport confirms you can also hand bags in at a counter, which is the option for bulky items.
Connectivity and SIM cards: Geneve Aeroport provides free Wi-Fi to its passengers and visitors. Get the access code by scanning your boarding pass at a kiosk in the terminal or through the GVApp, or by presenting a valid ID at the Visitors Centre on the Arrivals level, which is the route that still works when you have no boarding pass to scan. SIM cards are sold at the Change Helvetic exchange desks, which also handle currency and Western Union. The airport publishes no prices for them, so ask at the desk rather than assuming.
The France sector, if the onward run is into France: Geneva Airport has a French sector with its own road access, which matters if you are heading for Annecy, Chamonix or the Pays de Gex. The airport states that access is only via the customs road from Ferney-Voltaire, that it is not possible to cross on foot or by bicycle, and that only passengers with a valid flight ticket for the same day, plus or minus one day, can move between the France sector and the international sector. Car rental customers without a ticket must change sectors by road via the Ferney-Voltaire customs. Plan it as a separate road move, not as a walk through the terminal.

Can you drink the tap water in Geneva?
Yes. SIG, which supplies the whole canton apart from Celigny, states the tap water is rigorously controlled, as good as a mineral water and compliant with Swiss food standards, drawn 90 percent from Lake Geneva and 10 percent from local groundwater, with its tests validated by the cantonal chemist. On the 1,2,4-triazole measured at 0.7 micrograms per litre, the canton states there is no risk to human or animal health at those concentrations, that people can keep drinking tap water without restriction, and that boiling or filtering does not remove the molecule anyway.
