Getting from Athens Airport to the City Centre by metro, by Suburban Railway, or on the Airport Express bus
Two rail links and four express bus lines leave from the airport itself. Metro Line 3 is the direct run into the city centre. The Suburban Railway is the one with a published timetable, first train and last train in black and white, and the express buses are the cheap route that never stops running.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Athens, from Syntagma and Plaka under the Acropolis out to the port at Piraeus
Syntagma and Kolonaki: Where the airport bus and both metro lines put you down. Parliament square at the bottom, embassy streets and quiet cafes up the slope.
Plaka and Monastiraki: The old town under the Acropolis: stepped lanes, flea-market noise, and more sightseeing per hour than anywhere else in the city.
Koukaki and Makrygianni: Residential streets on the museum side of the hill. Calmer, and still inside walking range of the ancient sites.
Psyrri: A workshop district that turned into the late-night quarter. It wakes up about when the rest of the centre has shut.
Piraeus: A port city with its own harbours and a seafood strip. Both the X96 bus and the Suburban Railway end here.
What to Do on a Layover in Athens: is five hours enough to get out of the airport?
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. The rail run into Athens is 45 minutes each way before you add any waiting, and the return buffer eats whatever is left.
5 to 9 hours: One compact loop fits: metro or train to the centre, the Acropolis slope and the old town on foot, then back on the same ticket. Keep the return buffer sacred and it works.
9 hours plus: A full Athens day is realistic. Or skip the centre for Piraeus and the coast, which the X96 bus and the Suburban Railway both reach without a change.

Public transport payments: Skip the ticket machine. A physical bank card, or a phone or watch wallet, works straight off on the metro, the tram, the trolleybus, and the bus at the full-fare prices: 90 min EUR 1.20, 24 hours EUR 4.10, Airport Express bus EUR 5.50, and the metro airport ticket EUR 9.00.
Airport fare gotcha: City tickets do not reach the airport. The 90-minute EUR 1.20, the 24-hour EUR 4.10, and the 5-day EUR 8.20 are all invalid on the Airport Express buses and on the Koropi to airport section of metro line 3. Two things do work: the airport tickets themselves, and the 3-day tourist ticket at EUR 20.00, which builds in one ride from the airport and one back to it.
Express bus boarding rule: The Airport Express lines are not local buses. Toward the airport, disembarking is restricted. Away from it, boarding is restricted. That holds at every hour, so plan on riding the full leg instead of hopping off halfway.
Pickpockets: The metro and the crowded tourist spots are where a passport, a wallet, or a handbag disappears, central Athens most of all. Official UK government advice is to keep your valuables in more than one place, and to keep a copy of your passport photo page somewhere safe.
Connectivity: Greece sits inside the EU roaming area, so calls, SMS, and data on an EU, Icelandic, Liechtenstein, Norwegian, Ukrainian, or Moldovan plan cost what they cost at home. The catch is the word temporary: roam abroad more than you use the plan at home across a four-month period and the operator may contact you and add a surcharge. Plans from outside that area, UK ones included, fall outside the rule, though some operators keep the benefit voluntarily.
Last train back: The last Suburban Railway train toward the airport leaves Athens Central Station at 22:04 Monday to Friday and lands at 22:49. Miss it and you are on the Airport Express, which is the one thing here that runs on a 24-hour basis.
