Getting from Duesseldorf Airport into the city: the S11 from under the terminal, the long distance station and the SkyTrain, or a taxi?
This airport has two rail stations and they are not the same place. The S-Bahn S11 stops directly under the terminal and runs one seat to the main station, and from 4 September 2026 the Stadtbahn U80 leaves from that same terminal stop. Every other train, from regional services to ICE, uses the long distance station at the eastern edge of the airport, which is joined to the terminal by the SkyTrain. Buses at the long distance rail station no longer call at Flughafen Bf. Use the replacement stop about 150 metres away on EUREF-Campus. The planner still shows the old one.

The transport authority also reports that lines SB51, 729, 759 and 776 cannot call at the Flughafen Bf stop because of construction and use a replacement stop about 150 metres away on EUREF-Campus, behind the roundabout, until further notice, and that this change is not in the electronic journey planner. |

What to Do on a Layover in Duesseldorf, from a short sit in the terminal to the old town and the Rhine
Under 5 hours: Stay airside or in the terminal. The Wi-Fi is free and a run into town plus the walk back through security does not sit comfortably in a short window.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move works. Take the S11 from the station under the terminal to the main station, walk the Koenigsallee and the old town, and come back on the same line. Fix the train you intend to catch back before you leave the platform.
9 hours plus: A proper city run fits: the old town, the Rhine promenade, and one more district such as the MedienHafen, with a sit down meal. Keep the last connection in mind, because the rail link and the SkyTrain both thin out well before dawn.
Crew Tips for Duesseldorf and DUS Airport: the fare levels, the two rail stations, and the knife rule in the old town
Paying for transit: The VRR runs on three fare levels. An adult EinzelTicket is EUR 3,80 in Preisstufe A, which covers a trip inside one fare area, EUR 7,80 in Preisstufe B for a trip into a neighbouring area, and EUR 19,80 in Preisstufe C for the whole network. A Preisstufe A ticket is valid up to 90 minutes from validation and covers one journey from start to finish with as many changes as you like, but not a return. If you plan more than two rides, the 24-StundenTicket at EUR 7,60 in Preisstufe A is better value, it runs 24 hours from validation and covers up to five people, at EUR 5,10 for each extra person. Since 1 June 2026 the old zone system is gone and Duesseldorf’s previously split fare areas are one single area.
Two stations, and the one that catches people out: Duesseldorf Flughafen Terminal is the station in the basement of the terminal. Of the S-Bahn lines only the S11 calls there, and from 4 September 2026 the Stadtbahn U80 leaves from the same stop. Fernbahnhof Duesseldorf Flughafen is a different station at the eastern end of the airport where everything from regional trains to ICE calls, and it is joined to the terminal by the SkyTrain, seven minutes, every 5 to 7 minutes, daily from 3:45 to 0:45. If your booking says Duesseldorf Flughafen and you are standing in the terminal basement waiting for an ICE, you are at the wrong station. The SkyTrain does not run between 00:45 and 3:45, and until 25 October 2026 a shuttle bus covers 2:15 to 3:30 instead.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi in the terminal building is free and the only condition is accepting the terms of use. A paid premium tier exists if you need speed for a livestream or a call: EUR 4,00 for 30 minutes valid over 24 hours, EUR 6,00 for 60 minutes valid over 7 days, and EUR 12,00 for 240 minutes valid over a year, with a countdown you can stop and restart. The airport does not publish the network name, so pick the airport network from the list on the spot.
Luggage storage: Left luggage sits on the ground floor of car park 3, open daily 6:00 to 21:30. It costs EUR 10,00 per item per calendar day for a bag up to 30 kg, EUR 20,00 for sports gear, golf bags, bicycles, surfboards and oversize items, and EUR 3,00 for the coat check. A knife, scissors or a tool can be left in safekeeping for 90 days for EUR 15,00. Card only, no cash, and storage is without liability, so time your pickup inside those hours.
Knives and the old town at night: Duesseldorf’s old town has been a weapons ban zone since 21 December 2021. It applies at weekends and before and on public holidays, including carnival, during the evening and night hours, and it covers knives with a fixed or lockable blade longer than four centimetres. The exact hours are printed on the signs at the edge of the zone. Residents, hospitality staff and tradespeople are exempt, a visitor is not, and the fine can run to ten thousand euros. Leave the multitool in the crew bag.
Airport information and the meeting point: The information counter in the terminal is staffed daily from 05:30 to 00:15 and sits on the departures level in the public area at gate B, and on the arrivals level beside exit D. The arrivals counter is also the officially signposted meeting point, which is the useful one when a crew car or a colleague is looking for you. The phone line 0211 421-0 is answered daily 08:30 to 16:30 only, and the airport itself warns of long waits.

The city health office confirms regular testing keeps it inside the German drinking water ordinance. Nitrate measures 12,4 mg/l against a legal limit of 50 mg/l. It is hard water, about 14,8 degrees German hardness.
