Rome rewards a layover like almost nowhere else: you walk out of the station and 2,000 years of history is just there. The catch is the queues, so book the big sights ahead and save the wandering for the free stuff. Here is how to do a day off like a local.

Getting in from Fiumicino

• Leonardo Express: nonstop from the airport to Roma Termini in about 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, around 14 euros one way.
• From Termini the Metro and buses reach most of the center, but the historic core is best on foot.

The must-sees (book ahead)

• Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill: one combined ticket, and it needs an advance timed slot. Book a skip-the-line tour in peak season.
• Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: entry is online only, so get a timed ticket well ahead. Morning slots go first.
• St. Peter’s Basilica: free to enter, but shoulders and knees must be covered, so pack a light scarf.
• Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon: the Trevi is free and best early before the crush; the Pantheon now asks a small entry fee.

Hidden gems for your day off

• San Luigi dei Francesi: three Caravaggio masterpieces in a working church, free, two minutes from the Pantheon.
• Galleria Doria Pamphilj: a private palace gallery with four Caravaggios, closed Wednesdays.
• Galleria Borghese: Bernini and Caravaggio in a garden villa, but booking is mandatory and slots sell out fast.
• Villa Giulia: the Etruscan museum most visitors never reach, usually fine to walk up.
• Appian Way and the catacombs: the ancient road on foot, with catacombs below, but each one closes on a different weekday, so check first.
• Piazza Navona: Bernini’s fountains and a baroque square, free and always open.

• Spring and fall: mild and made for walking.
• Summer: very hot and crowded, so start early and drink from the street fountains.
• Winter: cool, quiet, and the sights are almost yours.

Stay sharp

• Bus routes 40 and 64 between Termini and the Vatican are pickpocket favorites, along with Termini itself and the Trevi crowd. Keep bags in front of you.
• Churches enforce the covered-shoulders-and-knees rule at the door, so carry something to throw on.
