Getting from CLT Airport into Uptown Charlotte: which ride makes sense?
CLT has no rail link. One limited-stop city bus, the CATS Sprinter, runs the terminal to Uptown in about half an hour, and a second route feeds the light rail at Tyvola. Everything else is a taxi or an app car off the curb. No curb or zone is published for the Sprinter stop at CLT. Follow the ground transportation signs, or ask at a Traveler Information Center in baggage claim.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Charlotte, from Uptown where the Sprinter ends to the districts just beyond it
Uptown (Center City): The compact grid of four wards where the Sprinter ends, walkable end to end, with the museums, the stadiums, and most of the hotel stock.
South End: Old mill and warehouse blocks along the light rail south of Uptown, now the brewery, patio, and mural strip.
NoDa (North Davidson): The former textile village turned arts district, with music venues and small galleries, a short ride northeast of the center.
Plaza Midwood: Bungalow streets east of Uptown with independent diners, thrift shops, and a slower evening than South End.
Dilworth: Tree-lined residential blocks just south of the center, quiet, with a park and a short restaurant strip on East Boulevard.
What to Do on a Layover in Charlotte, from a short sit airside to a full day in the city
Under 5 hours: Stay airside. CLT is an American Airlines fortress hub with tight connections and long security lines at the bank pushes, and a round trip into Uptown plus rescreening eats a short window whole. The terminal Wi-Fi is free.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move works: the Sprinter to the Charlotte Transportation Center, Uptown on foot, and the same bus back. Note the return departure before you leave the transit center, because the daytime gap is around 25 minutes and there is no other quick way back.
9 hours plus: Uptown plus one neighborhood beyond it, South End or Plaza Midwood, and a proper meal is realistic. Keep an eye on the last bus out of Uptown, which is 12:30 a.m. every day, and remember the transit center itself closes at 1:30 a.m.

Carry USD 2.50 in coins so either figure is covered, or buy in the CATS-Pass app and slide to activate shortly before you board, since an unactivated ticket counts as fare evasion. If you need to change to another route, ask the driver for a transfer as you pay; it is good for 105 minutes. Transfers are not issued to passengers boarding Uptown, so the airport-bound leg does not get one.
The late window, and where it closes: The last Sprinter out of the Airport Terminal is 1:01 a.m. on weekdays, 1:00 a.m. on Saturdays, and 12:54 a.m. on Sundays, and it reaches Uptown around 1:22 a.m., 1:22 a.m., and 1:14 a.m. respectively. The Charlotte Transportation Center closes at 1:30 a.m., so you are stepping off into a closing building, not a waiting room. In the other direction the last bus to the airport leaves Uptown at 12:30 a.m. every day. The airport taxi rank primarily works 5 a.m. to midnight, so an arrival between roughly 1:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. has neither a booked bus nor a guaranteed rank.
Ask for the flat rate before the meter starts: CLT publishes two flat taxi rates off the airport rank: USD 32 to Uptown within the I-277 loop, and USD 16 for anything within a 3 mile radius of the airport. A USD 2.50 airport fee applies to all trips. If the driver runs the meter instead, the airport’s published rate is USD 3.50 to start, USD 0.70 per one fifth of a mile, and USD 0.70 per minute when stopped or in traffic, which on a slow run into the center can beat the flat rate in the wrong direction. Say Uptown flat rate before you load the bags, and take the receipt. Fare disputes go to 704-359-4038.
Right level for an app car: App pickups at CLT are on the Departures and Ticketing level, upper level, inner lanes, Zones 1 to 3. Taxis are a level below, on the Arrivals and Baggage Claim outer curb in Zone 1. Crew coming off a late inbound tend to walk out of baggage claim and stand where the taxis are, then watch the app car circle a level above them. Go up, not out. The shuttle buses signposted at the curb are the free parking shuttles, running between the parking decks and the terminal, and they go nowhere near the city.
Connectivity in the terminal: CLT Free WiFi is the network name, it is free to all passengers, and the airport says it covers the terminal. Charging stations sit on all concourses and in additional gate areas, and seating with integrated power and USB is at Gates A1 to A39, B1 to B16, and C2 to C19. The airport’s own advice on the shared USB ports is to use your own cord and to disable data transfer while charging, which is worth following on a crew phone.
Reporting something on the transit system: CATS takes non-emergency reports from riders by text on 704-251-6402, through the CATS-Pass app, or through its web form, and says a report can be filed anonymously. That is for a problem on a bus or at a stop, not for an emergency. Anything in progress is 911, which for Charlotte, the airport, and the surrounding county is answered by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Communications Division; the first question you will be asked is whether you need police, fire, or medic.
