Getting from Cancun airport into the Hotel Zone or downtown: the ADO bus, the train, a taxi, or a rental car?
ADO, the official bus operator, does the work of getting you into Cancun, and it runs two different airport services: one to the Hotel Zone, one to the downtown terminal. The split matters and catches people out. Tren Maya has a station at the airport, but it runs down the coast rather than into the city. Everything else is a taxi or a rental car.

The state operator relaunched the Cancun to Playa del Carmen route on 15 August 2026 and held the flag off at Estacion Cancun Aeropuerto, so there is a Tren Maya station at the airport. Read the direction of travel carefully before you plan around it: the line runs down the coast through Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen, not into downtown Cancun and not to the Hotel Zone. For those the operator points to its Tren Maya Conecta intermodal shuttles, which it says connect stations with Cancun International Airport, hotel zones, and shopping centres, but whose fares and times it does not publish online and tells users to check at the station. The operator’s timetable also shows long distance services from its Cancun station to Merida Teya, Chetumal, and Tulum Aeropuerto. Baggage is up to three pieces totalling 50 kg at no charge, plus a 10 kg cabin bag and a personal item. Tren Maya publishes no fare for this route, so ask at the station counter before you buy. Downtown Cancun (El Centro): The inland working city on the grid around Avenida Tulum, where the ADO bus terminal sits and where the prices stop being resort prices.
Zona Hotelera (the Hotel Zone): The long barrier island strip along Boulevard Kukulcan, addressed by kilometer rather than by street number, with the beach on one side and the lagoon on the other.
Punta Cancun: The elbow at the north end of the Hotel Zone where the airport bus sets down, clustered with malls, restaurants, and the convention center.
Mercado 28 and Avenida Tulum: The market and main avenue end of downtown, the walkable part of the city if you only have one move in you.
Puerto Juarez: The northern waterfront edge of the city, the jumping off point toward Isla Mujeres and quieter than the strip.
What to Do on a Layover in Cancun, from staying in the terminal to a run down the coast to Playa del Carmen
Under 5 hours: Stay in the terminal. Cancun is a multi terminal airport, arriving international passengers clear immigration and customs, and the return screening has to fit too. A 45 minute run each way to the Hotel Zone does not sit comfortably inside a short window.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move works: the ADO bus to Punta Cancun, a walk on the beach and a meal near the stop, then back on the same service. Fix which return departure you are on before you leave the airport, because the Hotel Zone service does not run late.
9 hours plus: Enough room for the Hotel Zone and a look at downtown, or a slower sit somewhere on the strip. Playa del Carmen is reachable by train in about 49 minutes, but only four services run on that route and the last one back leaves Playa del Carmen at midday, so check it against your report time before you commit. Build the return around published times rather than assuming a late service exists, and treat a taxi as the fallback you have already priced.
Crew Tips for Cancun and CUN Airport: which Cancun your ticket goes to, why no taxi price is published, and the water rule
Know which Cancun you are going to: This is the trap that catches people here. Downtown Cancun and the Hotel Zone are two different destinations with two different ADO services, and the journey is not the same. The operator says it plainly: if you are staying in downtown Cancun, select the Cancun Downtown Bus Terminal rather than Punta Cancun. Booking the wrong one leaves you on the opposite side of the city with a paid taxi to fix it.
Paying for the bus: Tickets can be bought online, in the ADO app, or at the counter in the terminal, and the ticket is delivered digitally by email with no need to print. Booking online in advance is worth up to 50 percent off and skips the queue. Fares are published in Mexican pesos with a US dollar equivalent shown alongside, and one checked bag up to 25 kg is included in the fare.
Leaving your bags: The downtown ADO terminal has luggage storage, along with Wi-Fi, waiting rooms, ATMs, and food, and it is listed open 00:00 to 23:59. That is the only officially documented left luggage point we found: the operator’s airport terminal page lists only toilets and parking, and the airport operator publishes no baggage storage page at all. Plan around the downtown terminal, not the airport.
Taxis have no published price: The airport operator lists authorized taxis at Terminals 2 and 3 but publishes no fare table, no zone chart, and no estimate to town. Do not accept a figure quoted at you in the arrivals hall as an official rate, because there is no official rate published to check it against, and confirm the total with the driver before the journey starts.
Water and ice: Do not drink the tap water. UK government travel health advice for Mexico is to only drink boiled or bottled water and to avoid ice in drinks. Buy sealed bottled water, and be careful with ice and with drinks made from freshly squeezed juice you did not see prepared. The same advice notes reported cases of Cyclospora, a food and water bug, in travellers returning from Mexico.
Keep your valuables with you on the bus: Large cases go in the compartment under the coach, which is what makes the ADO service more practical than the local city buses if you are carrying luggage. The operator’s own instruction is to keep your passport, money, electronics, medication, and other valuables with you during the journey rather than in the hold.
