Getting from BWI Marshall Airport into Baltimore, or south to Washington: which train do you actually want?
Two rail options leave from two different places, and mixing them up costs you an hour. The Light RailLink stop is at the terminal and runs into downtown Baltimore. MARC and Amtrak leave from BWI Marshall Rail Station, which is off the terminal and reached by a free shuttle bus, and the MARC Penn Line runs both ways from there: north to Baltimore Penn Station and south to Washington Union Station. BWI publishes no taxi fare, and flat rates are not allowed there, so the meter decides. Ask the driver for an estimate before you load the bags.

What to Do on a Layover in Baltimore, from staying airside to a day in the city or down in Washington
Under 5 hours: Stay airside. The Wi-Fi is free, there is nowhere at BWI to leave a bag, and a downtown round trip plus screening on the way back does not sit comfortably in a short window.
5 to 9 hours: One clean move works: the light rail from the door of the terminal to Camden Station, the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill on foot, and back on the same line. Fix your return train in your head before you leave the platform.
9 hours plus: Either a full Baltimore run, downtown plus one neighborhood beyond it, or Washington instead by MARC from the rail station. Check the day first: the Sunday and holiday timetables on both railways are much thinner than the weekday ones.
Crew Tips for Baltimore and BWI Marshall Airport: the fare machines, the two stations, and the Sunday timetable
Paying for the light rail: Buy a single trip from a ticket vending machine, which at the airport sits near Lower Level Doors #18 and #19, or buy it in the CharmPass app and activate it before you reach the gate; once activated a one-way ticket is good for two hours. The operator states its Light Rail and Metro ticket machines accept cash, debit, and credit cards and that mobile wallets are not accepted, so do not arrive with only Apple Pay or Google Pay on your phone. A single trip is USD 2.00 and a day pass USD 4.60, valid until 3:00 a.m. the next day. Paying cash on a bus needs exact change because fareboxes give none. Nowhere to leave a bag: Do not plan a layover around dropping your bag at the airport. The operator’s own FAQ states: ‘There are no lockers at BWI Marshall Airport for luggage storage. All airport baggage storage has been suspended by order of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).’ The same entry says to ask your airline whether it will allow an early luggage check-in.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi is free and, unusually, it also runs on the airport shuttles: the operator states it offers free Wi-Fi service throughout the airport terminal building and on airport shuttles. One more thing if you board without a ticket: MDOT MTA sells one-way MARC tickets on board for CASH ONLY, no debit, credit or cheques, and conductors cannot accept notes above USD 20.
