The AKL crew card

Fastest into town AirportLink bus from outside the terminal to Puhinui Station, then a train into the city centre. The bus runs every 10 minutes, 7 days a week, and leaves the domestic terminal from 04:51 Monday to Friday and from 04:53 on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, with the last bus at 01:01. Auckland Transport publishes a running time only for the other direction: Puhinui Station to the domestic terminal 13 to 17 minutes, Puhinui Station to the international terminal 18 to 20 minutes
First & last The AirportLink leaves the domestic terminal at Auckland Airport from 04:51 Monday to Friday and from 04:53 on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, with the last bus at 01:01 every day. Auckland Transport publishes no separate first and last departure for the international terminal. In the other direction it runs from Manukau Bus Station from 04:30, last bus 00:40
Payments No cash and no EFTPOS on Auckland buses. Tag on and off with an AT HOP card or a contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express or UnionPay card, or Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. Adult AT HOP and contactless fares are NZD 3.00 for 1 zone, NZD 4.90 for 2 zones, NZD 6.50 for 3 zones and NZD 7.90 for 4 or more zones; the airport sits in the Northern Manukau zone and the city centre is the City zone
Tap water Safe to drink
Emergency 111 (New Zealand national numbers plus Auckland Airport terminal numbers) · non-emergency 105
Solo & at night Only companies licensed by the airport may pick you up from the designated taxi ranks, which sit in the Transport Pick-up zone, lanes 2 and 3, outside door 11 of international arrivals and outside door 4 at the domestic terminal. On Auckland Transport buses, trains and ferries you can text 4030 if you feel unsafe, and every major bus, train and ferry terminal has a bright orange Safety Point that connects you to the Auckland Transport Operations Centre
Crew knows The service window Auckland Transport quotes for the route as a whole is measured at the Manukau end, not at the airport. Out of the domestic terminal the first bus goes later than that window opens and the last one goes later than it closes, so an early landing waits and a late one still has a bus. One tap covers the bus and the connecting train together if you tag off and tag on inside the transfer window, so the two legs into the city centre are one fare and not two.

Getting from Auckland Airport into the city centre: the AirportLink bus and a train, the express coach, or a licensed taxi?

There is no train station at Auckland Airport. Everything on public transport starts with the orange AirportLink bus, which runs to Puhinui Station on the rail network. A private express coach runs direct to the city centre, and the licensed taxi ranks publish fixed fares to the CBD. From 13 September the City Rail Link opens and the train lines at Puhinui change name to East West Line, South City Line and Onehunga West Line.

Mode Time Cost Good to know
Bus (AirportLink) to Puhinui Station Auckland Transport publishes a running time only for the run towards the airport: Puhinui Station to the domestic terminal 13 to 17 minutes, Puhinui Station to the international terminal 18 to 20 minutes. It publishes no time for the run out of the terminals, which leaves the domestic terminal and calls at the international terminal before Puhinui
every 10 minutes, 7 days a week. Out of the airport the first bus leaves the domestic terminal at 04:51 Monday to Friday and 04:53 on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, and the last at 01:01. Towards the airport the service runs from Manukau Bus Station from 04:30 to 00:40, which is the 4:30am to 12:40am span Auckland Transport quotes for the route as a whole
adult AT HOP and contactless fares are NZD 3.00 for 1 zone, NZD 4.90 for 2 zones, NZD 6.50 for 3 zones and NZD 7.90 for 4 or more zones, with a maximum of a 4-zone fare however far you go. The full cash fares of NZD 4, NZD 6, NZD 8 and NZD 10 apply to paper tickets, which on a bus you can buy only with credit on an AT HOP card and never with cash or EFTPOS The bus leaves from stop B at the domestic terminal and stop A at the international terminal, marked with orange signage, and it has room for luggage on board. It carries on past Puhinui to Manukau Bus Station if you are heading south rather than into town. One fare covers the bus and the connecting train together as long as you tag off and tag on within 30 minutes and finish the whole journey inside 4 hours. The airport sits in the Northern Manukau zone and the city centre is the City zone, so use Auckland Transport’s own journey planner or the AT Mobile app if you want the exact price of your trip before you tap.
Train from Puhinui Station into the city centre The East West Line and the South City Line both call at Puhinui. Auckland Transport’s line pages put the service at every 15 minutes off-peak and about every 10 minutes on average at peak, with peak counted as 7am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm. The East West Line timetable is more specific about the evening: at least one service every 15 minutes during the day, reduced to one train every 30 minutes later in the evening. Plan an evening return on the 30 minute figure covered by the same AT HOP or contactless fare as the bus if you tag off and tag on within 30 minutes; cash tickets for the train can also be bought at Puhinui Station Trains run through the city centre rather than terminating at Waitematā, calling at Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau. No train clock times are given here, because the last train of the night is not the same on every night. Check the AT Mobile app or Auckland Transport’s train line status page on the day you travel, and fix your return train before you leave the platform.
Express coach (SkyDrive, operated by Ritchies Transport) every 30 minutes, with the first bus leaving the SkyCity bus terminal at 5:00am and the last bus leaving the domestic terminal at 22:30 tickets from the driver, card payment only, or booked in advance with the operator; the airport publishes no fare This runs direct between Auckland Airport and SkyCity in the central city, so it is a different product from the AirportLink and it does not use the same stops. Watch the stop letters: SkyDrive leaves from bus stop A at the domestic terminal and from bus stop E, marked Bus to City, at the transport hub outside the international terminal, while the AirportLink uses stop B at the domestic terminal and stop A at the international terminal. Intercity coaches also use bus stop E.
Taxi from the licensed rank fixed fares to the CBD published per company: Cheap Cabs NZD 62, Alert Taxis NZD 75, Auckland Co-op Taxis NZD 90 and Corporate Cabs NZD 105, on per kilometre rates of NZD 2.60, NZD 2.90, NZD 2.99 and NZD 4.05. Auckland Airport charges NZD 5.50 per pick up and NZD 3.50 per drop off, included in those fixed fares. Super Shuttle is a shared door to door service from NZD 20 per person based on two people travelling together Only companies licensed by the airport may pick up from the designated ranks. On demand taxi and Super Shuttle ranks are in the Transport Pick-up zone, lanes 2 and 3, outside door 11 of the international arrivals area, a one to two minute walk; pre-booked taxis meet inside arrivals. At the domestic terminal the ranks are outside door 4. The airport’s page also quotes a wider indicative range of NZD 38 to NZD 105 one way for a taxi, and shuttle pricing of NZD 35 for one person plus NZD 8 for each extra person in the same group, so ask for the price before you load the bags. Off-site shuttles use a separate Off-site Transfer zone, lanes 1 and 2, behind the Te Arikinui Pullman hotel, about a five to seven minute walk.
Rideshare (Uber, Bolt, DiDi) app priced; the airport publishes no fare Uber uses the dedicated Rideshare (Uber) pick-up zone at each terminal. Bolt and DiDi use separate Rideshare (Other) zones, so check the app and follow the signs for your own provider rather than walking to the Uber zone by habit. Some rideshare providers instead collect from the Off-site Transfer zone, so confirm which zone you are being sent to when you book. Drop-off zones are signposted at both terminals.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Auckland, from the waterfront and Karangahape Road out to the hotel belt in Mangere

Britomart and the waterfront: The bottom of Queen Street, the ferry terminal and the restored brick warehouse blocks, all around Waitematā Station, which the train from Puhinui calls at on its way through the city centre.

Karangahape Road: The ridge above the city centre, known for late food, record shops and bars rather than sightseeing, and getting its own station on the new rail line.

Ponsonby: A long strip of villas turned restaurants and independent shops on the western ridge, a short bus ride from the centre and the usual choice for a proper meal.

Newmarket and Parnell: Shopping and older streets southeast of the centre, both on the rail network and both easier to fit into a layover than anything across the harbour.

Mangere and the airport belt: The suburb the airport sits in, with the hotel cluster built around early report times rather than around anything to see.

What to Do on a Layover in Auckland, from a short sit in the terminal to an evening in Ponsonby

Under 5 hours: Stay airside or in the terminal. Wi-Fi is free, the international terminal is open around the clock, and a two-leg run into the city plus the return does not sit comfortably inside a short window.

5 to 9 hours: One clean move works: the AirportLink to Puhinui, the train to the city centre, the waterfront and Queen Street on foot, and back the same way. Fix your return train before you leave the platform, because the last train of the night is not the same on every night of the week.

9 hours plus: A full city run is realistic: the centre and the waterfront, one neighbourhood beyond it such as Ponsonby or Karangahape Road, and a proper meal, with the last AirportLink out of the domestic terminal at 01:01 behind you if the evening runs long. Check when the last train back to Puhinui goes before you count on it.

Crew Tips for Auckland and Auckland Airport: paying without cash, the repeated bus stop letters, and the rail timetable change

Paying for transit: Auckland buses take no cash and no EFTPOS, so sort payment before you reach the stop. Tag on and off with an AT HOP card or with a contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express or UnionPay card, or Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay; contactless is charged at the standard adult AT HOP fare. Fares go by how many of Auckland’s nine zones you cross: NZD 3.00 for 1 zone, NZD 4.90 for 2, NZD 6.50 for 3 and NZD 7.90 for 4 or more, and you never pay more than a 4-zone fare. Transfers between bus, train and ferry cost one fare if you tag off and on within 30 minutes and finish inside 4 hours. AT HOP holders get a NZD 50 seven-day fare cap and contactless users a NZD 20 daily cap.

Getting an AT HOP card at the airport: You do not need a HOP card if your bank card taps, but if you want one there are three places at the airport. At the domestic terminal, a vending machine sits next to the AirportLink bus stop just outside door 4. At the international terminal, buy one at the Take Home Convenience shop in the arrivals area next to the building exit, or from the vending machine next to bus stop A inside the transport hub. A card costs NZD 5 plus whatever you load, with a minimum top-up of NZD 1; a preloaded card from a vending machine costs NZD 25 and comes with NZD 20 of travel credit on it.

Two different bus stop A: The stop letters repeat between terminals and it catches people out. The AirportLink uses stop B at the domestic terminal and stop A at the international terminal. SkyDrive, the express coach to SkyCity, uses stop A at the domestic terminal and stop E, marked Bus to City, at the international transport hub. Look for the orange AirportLink signage rather than the letter alone.

The train timetable changes on 13 September: The AirportLink runs until 01:01 out of the domestic terminal, but the train is the leg to check. The last train of the night is far earlier on some nights than on others, and Auckland Transport publishes no single last departure for Puhinui. Check the AT Mobile app or Auckland Transport’s train line status page on the day you travel before you commit to a late run back.

Connectivity and showers: Auckland Airport offers free unlimited Wi-Fi in both terminals: pick the network called Auckland Airport, then click Get online on the login page and enter your details. Free shower facilities are in both terminals as well, in international departures after security near adidas and in international arrivals outside the arrivals gate near door 11, and at the domestic terminal before security in zone B near door 4 and after security near Hudsons. Towels and toiletries are sold rather than supplied.

Luggage storage: Secure Travel handles luggage storage and wrapping. At the international terminal the counter is by door 3 on the ground floor, opposite Qantas check-in, open 4.30am to 11pm. At the domestic terminal it is a bank of self-service lockers on the ground floor of Carpark R opposite the terminal, operational 24 hours a day, with no wrapping or accessories at that location. The airport publishes no price, so ask at the counter or on the locker screen before you commit.

How do I get from Auckland Airport to the city centre?

There is no train station at the airport, so it is two legs. Take the orange AirportLink bus from stop B at the domestic terminal or stop A at the international terminal to Puhinui Station, then change to a train into the city centre. The bus runs every 10 minutes, 7 days a week, leaving the domestic terminal from 04:51 Monday to Friday and 04:53 at weekends and on public holidays, with the last at 01:01. Auckland Transport times the leg only in the other direction, Puhinui to the domestic terminal in 13 to 17 minutes and to the international terminal in 18 to 20 minutes, and one fare covers both legs if you tag off and tag on within 30 minutes.

How much is the bus from Auckland Airport?

Auckland Transport prices by how many of its nine zones you cross, and the airport sits in the Northern Manukau zone while the city centre is the City zone. Adult AT HOP and contactless fares are NZD 3.00 for 1 zone, NZD 4.90 for 2 zones, NZD 6.50 for 3 zones and NZD 7.90 for 4 or more, and you never pay more than a 4-zone fare. Auckland Transport publishes no single airport to city figure and points riders at its own journey planner for the exact price of a trip.

What time is the last bus from Auckland Airport?

The last AirportLink leaves the domestic terminal at 01:01, every day of the week. The first is 04:51 Monday to Friday and 04:53 on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Auckland Transport publishes no separate first and last departure for the international terminal. The train leg is the one to check: the last train of the night is not the same on every night, so look at the AT Mobile app or the train line status page on the day before you count on a late train back.

How much is a taxi from Auckland Airport to the city?

The airport licenses the companies that may pick up from its ranks and publishes a fixed fare to the CBD for each: Cheap Cabs NZD 62, Alert Taxis NZD 75, Auckland Co-op Taxis NZD 90 and Corporate Cabs NZD 105. Those fixed fares already include the airport’s own charge of NZD 5.50 per pick up and NZD 3.50 per drop off. Super Shuttle, the shared door to door service, starts at NZD 20 per person based on two people travelling together.

Is tap water safe to drink in Auckland?

Yes. Watercare, the utility that supplies Auckland, states that in the Auckland region the water is safe for drinking and cooking and for every other use around the home. It is screened, filtered and disinfected before it enters the network, and technicians run an average of 366 tests a day on samples taken from the source through to the tap.
