The ADD crew card

Fastest into town Take the bus or taxi from the airport that your hotel or travel company organised. If you book your own taxi, UK FCDO says pick yellow or app-based taxis, not the blue and white ones
First / last run No different from daylight: the pickup your hotel or travel company organised, or a yellow or app-based taxi. In Bole Medhanealem, Bole Atlas, Meskel Square, Yeka Hills, and Entoto, UK FCDO says do not travel alone if possible, and use road transport there, especially after dark
Payments Cash-based society. Card payments and ATMs are limited and unreliable, so carry enough birr (ETB) before you head out
Tap water Not from the tap. Boiled or bottled water only, for drinking and for anything else, and no ice in drinks
Emergency 991 (Addis Ababa numbers; Dutch government advice notes these work only in the capital)
Solo & at night Petty theft around Bole International Airport, mostly pickpockets and bag-snatchers. On foot, UK FCDO says be cautious and consider road transport where possible, especially after dark
Crew knows The Safaricom eSIM costs ETB 50. On the welcome offer, every ETB 50 top-up returns 6 GB plus 1,000 minutes and 1,000 SMS on-net, recurring monthly, so keeping one profile between rotations costs ETB 50 a trip instead of ETB 100

Getting from Bole Airport to Addis Ababa on the ground

Road transport, and that is the whole list. UK FCDO tells travellers to use only buses or taxis from the airport that their hotel or travel company has organised, and to pick yellow or app-based taxis when they book their own. The Addis Ababa Light Rail runs two lines across the city, but the operator names no airport station on its light rail pages. Useful once you are in town. No help getting there.

Mode Time Cost Good to know
Hotel or company pickup, or yellow airport taxi UK FCDO guidance for Bole airport is narrow: use only buses or taxis from the airport that have been organised by your hotel or travel company, and if you book your own taxi, choose yellow or app-based taxis rather than the blue and white ones. Fares and journey times are another matter. No reachable official publisher lists either one, so agree the price before you get in.
Ride-hailing (RIDE) RIDE is run in the capital by Hybrid Designs PLC, which entered the transport hailing market in 2014. Order a car through the RIDE passenger app or the 8294 short code, and RIDE Plus takes the payment cashless. Fares are not published. UK FCDO points you toward yellow or app-based taxis, but names no operator.
Light rail (Addis Ababa LRT), city only Two lines, per operator ERC: East-West from Ayat to Tor Hailoch (17.4 km) and North-South from Menelik II Square to Kality (16.59 km), sharing 2.7 km of common track from St. Lideta church to Meskel Square, 39 stations in total. What ERC never names on those light rail pages is an airport station or an airport line. Treat it as a city network you reach after you are already in town. No current fares, operating hours, or frequency appear on the operator’s site either.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Addis Ababa: where to put your bag down

Bole: The district wrapped around the airport. Embassy compounds, malls, international restaurants, and the shortest ride back to the terminal of anywhere on this list.

Kazanchis and Meskel Square: Government and conference country, climbing from Meskel Square, the city’s ceremonial center, up toward the UN offices.

Piassa and Arat Kilo: The older commercial quarter, further uphill again. Cathedral domes, university buildings, and the museum district close by.

Entoto hills: Eucalyptus slopes above the city, and the sweeping viewpoints are the reason anyone climbs up. UK FCDO also flags it as one of the districts with increased crime, so go in daylight and go with a driver.

What to Do on a Layover in Addis Ababa: how long have you got?

Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Immigration lines, entry formalities, and a ride back that nobody can time will eat a short window faster than the map suggests.

5 to 9 hours: One anchor, done slowly. A coffee ceremony plus one central stop, with a prebooked driver both ways. The thin air slows everything down more than it looks like it should, so plan one loop rather than three.

9 hours plus: Now a proper half-day with a driver works: the old quarter, a market stop, and the Entoto viewpoints, back with daylight to spare. Build rest into it. The city sits high, and most people feel it.

Crew Tips for Addis Ababa

Airport taxis: Only use buses or taxis from the airport that have been organised by your hotel or travel company. Booking your own? Yellow or app-based taxis, not the blue-and-white ones. That is the official UK FCDO wording for Bole, not a preference of ours.

Cash first: Ethiopia runs on cash. Card payments and ATMs are limited and unreliable, and worse outside the cities, so sort enough birr early. Never build a day around finding a working ATM.

Altitude: Addis Ababa sits at 2,400m, and that altitude is not decoration. UK government health advice flags altitude sickness as a risk in parts of Ethiopia including Addis Ababa. Take the first hours slowly, drink water, and keep the layover plan light.

Connectivity: Safaricom Ethiopia sells an eSIM for ETB 50, and the welcome offer runs for the next 6 months: every ETB 50 airtime top-up gets you 6 GB plus 1,000 minutes and 1,000 SMS on-net, recurring every month. What that page does not tell you is whether registration or ID is required.

Petty theft pattern: Petty theft around Bole International Airport is a UK FCDO line item: pickpockets and bag-snatchers, plus criminal groups working distraction techniques such as begging, spitting, spilling food and drink, and feigning illness. Reported crime against foreign and Ethiopian nationals has increased in Bole Medhanealem, Bole Atlas, Meskel Square, Yeka Hills, and Entoto, and mugging is on the rise. So: phones out of sight, bags zipped, nothing loose in back pockets.

Emergency Numbers for Addis Ababa and Ethiopia

👉 Swipe sideways if the numbers do not fit

Police (Addis Ababa) 991
Ambulance (Addis Ababa) 907
Ethiopian emergency services, immediate danger (likely answered in Amharic) 939
Ethiopia country code (calling from abroad) +251

Save these before you fly; numbers work from any phone.

How do you get from Addis Ababa Bole Airport to the city center?

By road. UK FCDO says to use only buses or taxis from the airport that your hotel or travel company organised, and, if you book your own taxi, to choose yellow or app-based taxis rather than the blue-and-white ones. RIDE is the established app option, ordered in the RIDE passenger app or on the 8294 short code. What nobody publishes is the money: no reachable official publisher lists a fare table or a journey time, and RIDE publishes no fares.

Is there a train or metro from Addis Ababa airport to the city?

Not to the airport, no. Operator ERC describes two light rail lines, East-West from Ayat to Tor Hailoch and North-South from Menelik II Square to Kality, and names no airport station or airport line anywhere on its light rail pages. The light rail only earns its keep once you are already in the city core.

Can you drink tap water in Addis Ababa?

No. UK government health advice for Ethiopia is to drink or use only boiled or bottled water, and to avoid ice in drinks. Buy sealed bottled water for the hotel room and for the ride back.
