Bole: The district wrapped around the airport. Embassy compounds, malls, international restaurants, and the shortest ride back to the terminal of anywhere on this list.
Kazanchis and Meskel Square: Government and conference country, climbing from Meskel Square, the city’s ceremonial center, up toward the UN offices.
Piassa and Arat Kilo: The older commercial quarter, further uphill again. Cathedral domes, university buildings, and the museum district close by.
Entoto hills: Eucalyptus slopes above the city, and the sweeping viewpoints are the reason anyone climbs up. UK FCDO also flags it as one of the districts with increased crime, so go in daylight and go with a driver.
What to Do on a Layover in Addis Ababa: how long have you got?
Under 5 hours: Stay at the airport. Immigration lines, entry formalities, and a ride back that nobody can time will eat a short window faster than the map suggests.
5 to 9 hours: One anchor, done slowly. A coffee ceremony plus one central stop, with a prebooked driver both ways. The thin air slows everything down more than it looks like it should, so plan one loop rather than three.
9 hours plus: Now a proper half-day with a driver works: the old quarter, a market stop, and the Entoto viewpoints, back with daylight to spare. Build rest into it. The city sits high, and most people feel it.
