The AUH crew card

Fastest into town Airport taxi from the rank at Zayed International Airport, which works around the clock; the ride into the city typically costs around AED 70 to AED 80 with the initial flag fall in it, depending on destination and traffic
First / last run Night bus N2 from the Terminal A Arrival stop, every 15 min between 23:20 and 05:50, into Al Zahiyah Bus Station in the city centre in about 55 min
Payments City buses run on the Hafilat smart card, sold and topped up at the ticket machines near the bus stops at the airport; cash does not work on board
Tap water Supplied as drinking water under the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy Water Quality Regulations, which require water supplied for drinking to be wholesome and reflect WHO guidance; no official Abu Dhabi source puts a plain safe to drink verdict on it, and none advises against drinking it
Emergency 999 (999, 998, and 997 work anywhere in the UAE; the Abu Dhabi area code is 02)
Solo & at night Use the official airport taxi rank, or book in the official Careem, Uber, or Yango apps and meet your driver at the designated zone; never take an unsolicited offer from someone inside the terminal
Crew knows The cheap way into town is the one you cannot pay for at the door. A bus journey caps at AED 5 where a taxi typically runs AED 70 to AED 80, but no bus takes cash, and the anonymous Hafilat card costs AED 10, twice that capped fare. Buy it at the ticket machines by the airport bus stops. It stays valid for 16 years, so it is still working next rotation

Getting from Zayed International Airport to Abu Dhabi City Centre by city bus, metered airport taxi, or ride-hailing

No rail link, no metro. What the airport’s own transport pages leave you is city buses from stops just outside the Arrivals area, official airport taxis at the rank around the clock, licensed ride-hailing with designated pickup zones, car rental, and a coach to Dubai every hour. Etihad Rail carries passengers between Abu Dhabi Station and Fujairah Station only, and no station on that line is here.

Mode Time Cost Good to know
City bus A1 (to Al Zahiyah Bus Station) 46 to 52 min from the Terminal A Arrival stop to Al Zahiyah Bus Station AED 2 boarding fee plus 5 fils per km, maximum AED 5 per journey First bus out of the Terminal A Arrival stop is 06:05, the last one 23:05, and the timetable does not change at the weekend. Route A2 takes the Khalifa Street and Corniche side of the city instead, Terminal A Arrival 06:12 to 22:50, also roughly every 30 min. Bring a Hafilat card. Cash gets you nowhere on board.
Night bus N2 (to Al Zahiyah Bus Station) 54 to 55 min from the Terminal A Arrival stop to Al Zahiyah Bus Station AED 2 boarding fee plus 5 fils per km, maximum AED 5 per journey Runs 23:20 to 05:50 from the Terminal A Arrival stop, weekend nights included, calling at Al Nahyan and Abu Dhabi Bus Station on the way. Together with route A1 that keeps bus service at the airport around the clock.
Airport taxi metered: flag fall AED 20.00 day and night, AED 1.82 per km, AED 0.50 per minute of waiting; booking fee AED 4.00 daytime (06:00 to 22:00) and AED 5.00 night (22:00 to 06:00) The rank works 24/7, on the meter, to any destination inside Abu Dhabi. Wheelchair accessible and larger vehicles are available too. Pay cash or card where you get out. For the city run, the Abu Dhabi government tourism portal puts the typical fare at around AED 70 to AED 80 with the flag fall in it.
Ride-hailing (Careem, Uber, Yango) Careem and Uber both work here, and so does Yango, with designated zones for connecting with the driver. Arriving, you follow the in-app instructions to the designated pick-up zone. Heading out, drivers can drop you at the Departures Forecourt or within the designated drop-off areas of the car park. Book through the official apps only, and turn down anyone inside the terminal who offers you a ride.
Airport Express coach to Dubai 90 min to Ibn Battuta Bus Station Both directions between the airport and Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai, on the hour, every hour, 00:00 through 23:00. Tickets come from a dedicated counter in the Arrivals Hall. What it costs, the airport page does not say.

Best Areas for Crew Stays in Abu Dhabi, from Al Zahiyah at the end of the bus line out to Saadiyat Island

Al Zahiyah (Tourist Club Area): Where the airport bus ends up. A dense grid of older streets on the eastern end of the main island, thick with shops and cafes.

Al Markaziyah and Khalifa Street: The downtown core. Offices and the souk quarter, with the waterfront a short walk to the north.

The Corniche and Al Danah: Long promenade on a flat waterfront strip. If you want to walk or run off a night sector, this is the easiest ground in the city.

Al Reem Island: Newer high-rise district just off the main island. Malls and waterfront walkways, and it goes quiet in the evening.

Saadiyat Island: Museum and beach island. The calmer choice when the downtown grid feels like too much for a short window.

What to Do on a Layover in Abu Dhabi: is five hours enough to get into the city and back?

Under 5 hours: Stay airside. Free Wi-Fi reaches the whole terminal, there are lounges and an airport hotel, and going out means clearing immigration twice. The buffer is worth more than the trip.

5 to 9 hours: Now a city run works. The A1 bus is in Al Zahiyah in about 50 minutes, an airport taxi covers the same ground on the meter, and either way you get a couple of hours on the Corniche or in the downtown grid before you turn around.

9 hours plus: Enough for a full Abu Dhabi day, or for Dubai: the hourly Airport Express coach is 90 minutes each way. Keep the return buffer fat, and remember the buses keep running at night.

Crew Tips for Abu Dhabi and Zayed International Airport: the card the bus demands, and the left luggage counter that never closes

Public transport payments: Buses run on the Hafilat smart card. The anonymous one costs AED 10, stays valid for 16 years, and is sold at the sales and recharge machines, at the Customer Happiness Offices at bus stations and the airport, and online. Fares are AED 2 to board plus 5 fils per km, capped at AED 5 a journey. Tap into the next bus service within 60 minutes of your last tap out and the transfer costs nothing, up to 2 transfers across 3 buses. Children aged 10 and below travel free.

Taxi fares and payment: The airport meter opens at AED 20.00, day or night, then runs AED 1.82 per km and AED 0.50 for every minute of waiting, with a booking fee of AED 4.00 in the daytime and AED 5.00 at night. A silver city taxi you pick up later in town is a different animal: AED 5.00 flag fall daytime, AED 5.50 at night, minimum trip fare AED 12. It takes cash, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, the PayBy app, or a card through the Abu Dhabi Taxi app.

Connectivity and SIM cards: Wi-Fi is free and unlimited: pick the network named Zayed International Airport Free Wifi, then click Connect when the welcome box appears. For a local SIM, the UAE government portal states that Etisalat sells a Visitor Line and du sells a Tourist Plan, and that visitors can buy the plans at Etisalat or du shops located at airports. Bring paperwork. The same portal states visitors need to provide a copy of their passport and UAE visa to obtain one.

Luggage storage: The airport says the left luggage facility is typically on the Arrivals level of the terminal building, and that all facilities operate 24/7. Rates run per item: AED 35 up to 3 hours, AED 55 up to 12 hours, AED 75 up to 24 hours, AED 105 up to 48 hours, and AED 140 up to 72 hours, after which AED 25 per day stacks on top of the AED 140 already incurred. Hand over 10 items and 10 percent comes off; at 20 items it is 15 percent. Rates and terms, the airport says, are worth confirming at the counter.

Ride-hailing safety: Careem operates from the airport, so do Uber and Yango, but only rides booked through the official apps are allowed. Follow the in-app instructions to the designated pick-up zone, meet your driver there, and say no to anyone offering you a ride inside the terminal.

Leaving the airport: More than four hours before your next flight and you can apply for a transit visa to explore Abu Dhabi, according to the Abu Dhabi tourism authority. GCC citizens do not need a visa at all, and citizens of most countries can get one on arrival. For detail on the transit visa, the authority tells you to contact your airline. Its travel advisory refers visa and entry questions to the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security at icp.gov.ae, and states that Abu Dhabi is operating normally, that Zayed International Airport is open and operational, and that some public attractions and events have temporarily paused in line with official guidance. Read that advisory before you plan a trip into town, because it is time-sensitive.

How do I get from Zayed International Airport to Abu Dhabi city centre?

Three ways. The A1 city bus goes from just outside Arrivals to Al Zahiyah Bus Station in about 50 minutes, every 30 minutes from 06:05 to 23:05, and costs AED 2 boarding plus 5 fils per km with a maximum of AED 5 per journey. An airport taxi from the rank runs on the meter around the clock from an AED 20.00 flag fall, and typically lands at around AED 70 to AED 80 into the city. Careem and Uber operate too, and so does Yango, from designated pickup zones.

How much is a taxi from Abu Dhabi airport to the city?

Around AED 70 to AED 80 with the initial flag fall in it, give or take your destination and the traffic. The meter opens at AED 20.00 day and night, then charges AED 1.82 per km and AED 0.50 per minute of waiting, and a booking fee of AED 4.00 daytime or AED 5.00 at night sits on top. Cash or card, paid where you get out.

Is there a bus from Abu Dhabi airport at night?

Yes. Route N2 leaves the Terminal A Arrival stop every 15 minutes from 23:20 to 05:50, weekends included, and is at Al Zahiyah Bus Station in about 55 minutes. Add route A1, which runs 06:05 to 23:05, and the airport has bus service around the clock. Bring a Hafilat card: cash is not accepted on board.

Captain’s recommendation: on the results page, only pick a rental company rated 8.0 or higher. The price gap with a lower-rated desk is usually small, but a well-rated supplier means a faster pickup, a fair fuel policy, and far fewer surprises at the counter.
